Directors since 1977 Based on my proposal, the Board for the past several
years has divided itself into working subcommittees to reflect the business it
conducts Based on my proposal two years ago. the Board has required its
management t»> develop and work within a planned budget. With five years of
service to the Bookstore, I believe I bring to the Board a unique background
and “institutional memory" which » a helpful resource to the Board Each year
I have been impressed by the interest, enthusiasm and dedication of its eight
student members. I hope again to have the privilege of serving the Bookstore 's
membership as one of its eleven Director*.

1 have made every effort
to ensure that the
classified staff be recognized as a viable consumer group. W'lth your
overwhelming response to my recent survey, I was instrumental in having the
Bookstore expand its services for the classified staff by opening the store at
7:30 ».m so you may- shop before work, increasing the greeting card selection
and implementing a price comparison survey from which you will benefit
With the prevailing poor economic conditions, budgetary constraints, limited
enrollments and possible salary cuts, 1 plan to use my previous experience to
assure that the management decisions the Bookstore makes will be in your best
interests

in the University of Oregon Bookstore, Inc. and can vote for its Board of
Directors on May 13th and 14th As a candidate for the sophomore positions, I
feel that there arc three things that the Board members need to strive for
EFFICIENCY - There always has been and will be a need to improve the
efficiency in the operations of any business, (.specially at the start of each term,
the Bookstore needs to shorten the time it takes to purchase texts for courses.
PRICfcS — The Bookstore has one of the highest discounts on textbooks in the
nation It should continue the. excellent program. Prices, on other items, should
always he comparable to other local businesses.
COMMUNICATIONS - There is a need to bring the Bookstore's Board of
Directors to the stockholders A way to open the lines of communication is to
have Board of Directors’ meetings at the EMU. Any major policy changes
should be publicized in the Oregon Daily Emerald before final action, to assure
stockholder input

I received my undergraduate degree from the U of O, then worked for a
wholesale and retailing firm for two years before returning to school full time. 1
am presently a graduate student in both the Business and law schools.
In the years I have been at the U of O, I have observed the changes the
Bookstore has initiated. Fortunately there » currently a greater emphasis on
the sale of used books atid saving students as much money as possible As a
member of the Board of Directors 1 would like to expand this policy to give
students greater discounts and more efficient service.
I also served as a president and board member in the Oberlin Student
Cooperative Association. After college, I continued my coop work on two food
co-op boards and aa a lobbyn» for the National Consumer Cooperative Bank in
Washington, D.C. Upon graduation from law school, 1 intended to further
pursue my interest in consumer-owned business.
The University of Oregon Bookstore is a non-profit, consumer-owned
corporation. That means the Bookstore is your bookstore. It is accountable to
you and should be operated in your interest, not for anyone’s personal profit.
As a board member, 1 would be your advocate; ensuring that the Bookstore
provide the moat services at the lowest possible prices. Responsiveness to
consumer suggestions is basic to consumer-owned business and I encourage
you, as an owner, to voice your feelings to the management and the board.
I believe co-ops provide a great opportunity for people to save money, be
responsible consumers, and build stronger communities. 1 can make no specific
campaign promises, except that I am firmly committed to the principles of
consumer-owned business

Bookstore that provides you with books and other goods at a low cost. 1 am a
graduate student in the School of Business Administration and I have the skills
necessary to make sure that the Bookstore operates at its best. The Bookstore
Directors make major decisions that affect the cost and quality of the goods you
buy. As a business student, I am best qualified to make these decisions on your
behalf. For a better-managed Bookstore, please vote for me this Thursday or
Friday at one of the booths outside the EMU, Bookstore, or Colbert Hall.
The Bookstore is responsible to the
University but it’s up to the Board of
Directors to keep it that way. That’s why
it’s so important for you to vote. Take a
minute or two and review the candidates,
and vote. A competent Board is crucial to
the University’s voice in operations.

Keep the Bookstore believing in higher

My name is Ron Taylor, I am
running for the student-at
-large position on the
Bookstore Board of Directors.
I am a junior majoring in Business Management with a minor in Computer
In addition to the theories I have learned in my business classes, 1 have practical
experience in managing and retail. I've managed a drive-in restaurant, and a
restaurant and lounge; where competence in purchasing, inventory control,
mark-up and sales were essential. As a member of the Commercial Bank Junior
Board of Directors m Salem, i was involved in planning the positions of bank
branch on vacant bank property and in designing an advertisement for
publication. I learned how upper level management decisions are made.
I believe I can do a good job representing you on the Bookstore Board of
Directors. Remember vote RON TAYLOR, student-at-large.

My name is Kevin Thomas and
I am running for the position
of student-at-large for the
Bookstore Board of Directors.
This ii my second year at the University of Oregon and I am classified as a
junior by number of credits earned. My major is Developmental/Molecular
Biology
In my two years that I have been at the University and used the Bookstore, I
have noticed one minor problem. That is at book-buying time there are a lot of
people crammed onto the second floor buying textbooks. Now, I would say
after standing in Mac Court for classes that one is not inclined to stand in a line
at the Bookstore. So what I would like to do, if elected, is to speed up the
process of buying books, so one does not have to stand in line with an armload
of books. I have also noticed that the first floor has a few traffic problems. At
this time, 1 have several ideas, but would like to get input and ideas from
students, staff, and the Board of Directors.

The primary duty of a Board
member is to deliver benefits
to Bookstore shareholders:
students, faculty, and staff.
Currently the henefits include a discount on textbooks and the privilege of
electing Board members. More can be done to benefit shareholders.
Our non-profit bookstore sells general books, magazines, and other items at the
same price as “for-profit” businesses. Surplus funds are distributed to the
I 'mversity, not the shareholders. If elected, I will pursue lower prices,
increased employment, and better service by capitalizing on the store’s
non-profit status and reinvesting surplus funds.
QUALIFICATIONS: In 1979 I received my MBA from Oregon. Currently I
am a second year law student specializing in commercial law. I have managed a
department responsible for S20 million in revenues and $12 million in
expenditures.
PRICES: Discounts should be encouraged. With falling student enrollment, the
Health of the Bookstore as well as textbook discounts depends on incentives to
increase revenues. Students and ocher consumers will be more likely to spend at
the Bookstore if prices of items not discounted at other stores are lowered —
magazines, general books, etc.
EMPLOYMENT: If elected, employment opportunities generated by
revenues will benefit students.

Though I can't promise you I’ll change these situations, 1 will try to improve
conditions at the Bookstore.
As the Bookstore is non-profit, every dollar saved because of efficiency is
passed on to the students in cheaper prices and better service. Thus, if we
increase efficiency, we save money.
1 believe I have the knowledge, experience, and incentive to help. I have an
undergraduate business administration degree and am now finishing my first
year of law school. I have worked in the retail business most of my life and
know how to run an efficient business. Thus, I feel my practical experience can
help increase the Bookstore's efficiency and save us dollars with quicker service.
Some areas to analyze are the checkstands (especially when buying textbooks),
the installation of computerized checkout and inventory control, and a greater
emphasis on student suggestions.
So, vote for Jon Gimre for student-at-large, and let's try to save us some money.
