New street violence broke out
in Warsaw and Krakow Thurs
day evening after a day of scat
tered protests marking five
months of martial law
Witnesses said the worst
clashes were in Krakow where
police firing tear gas water
cannon and concussion gren
ades battled a crowd estimated
at 10,000 gathered outside a
church
The witnesses said the crowd
gathered outside the Church of
the Virgin Mary in Krakow after a
Mass and began chanting

yelling for a march Police
charged the crowd with shields
and nightsticks and the battle
began
A smaller clash involving
about 1,000 youths took place in
Warsaw s Old City and police
dispersed the crowd with tear
gas and clubs The incidents

than the rioting of May 3. which
