Hi Mom and Dad
Now about my allowance
Although the team did well in
the 1979 nationals, it was the
first year an Oregon team was
sent to the finals
"For years we've had enough
talent to compete" says Terry
Samura, who was team captain
in 1979
"But we were unorganized,
and no one ever had enough
money to travel We decided to
go to LA, since it’s so close
Ever since, it's been easier to
get people to go every year.”
University instructor Robert
Graves, a 4th-degree black belt
and chief instructor in the
Northwest, will be head referee
for Saturday's activities Graves
thinks the event will be enter
taining for spectators, but says
it's mainly for the participants
"The whole thing is really just
a part of training, learning to do
things right under pressure," he
says. "Tournaments are in no
sense the goals of training, they
are just an added incentive for
some people "
In keeping with the instruc
tional goals of the event, a
dozen University students who
are participating in a judging
class this term will help to of
ficiate Hoping to qualify for a
regional judging license, some
of the students will even be us
ing the tournament as a final
exam
The regional tournament is
the major Northwest competi
tion for the team On May 22
aand 23, Sensei Hidetaka
Nshiyama, one of the nation's
best instructors an 8th degree
black belt, will come to the
University to give a six-hour
seminar
"Sensei Nishiyama's semin
ars here are very important for
our training," says Adrian
Novotny, a graduate student at
the University, and a competitor
in Saturday's event
"We re all trying to develop
good technique, and when he
explains something, he follows
it with a demonstration that's
like an explosion, and it's truly
inspirational "

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon State University
Athletic Board approved new athletic department budget cuts
of $168,000 Thursday for the 1982-83 academic year
The board endorsed and sent to President Robert Mac
Vicar a $4.2 million men's athletics budget from which
$115,000 had been deducted
Athletic Director Dee Andros said the savings will be
realized from reductions in travel expenses and in baseball,
wrestling and track and field scholarships
The board approved a $665,000 women's athletics budget
that had been reduced by $53,000 so it would balance with
anticipated revenues Women s sports administration costs
will be cut $28,000, and the rest of the reductions will be
spread among six sports
The board also recommended complete merger of the
men's and women's athletic departments, contrary to the
recommendation of a board subcommittee that wanted parts
of the program to remain separate
The board includes representatives of the faculty, alumni
and students
