Saturday.
Teams from 17 clubs and u
niversities are entered including
Florida State, California, Stan
ford, Oregon State, UTEP, and
Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.
The Ducks won't be at full
strength for the meet, because,
like just about everyone else on
campus, they have been hit by a
case of the flu. Grace Bakari,
Robin Pate and Kathy Hayes will
all miss the meet because of the
virus Jeanne Borchardt is also
out with a foot injury, and Lexie
Miller is out with a leg strain
They will find plenty of com
petition in Berkeley. In an effort
to take everyone who qualified
for the meet, Oregon coach
Tom Heinonen took only half of
his athletes who qualified for
last week's NCWSA regional to
Missoula, Montana

“The Pacific Coast Invitation
al will give us our final sharpen
ing for the NCAAs,” said
Oregon coach Tom Heinonen
who will take his team to Provo,
Utah in two weeks for the NCAA
meet.
"We had a solid team show
ing at regionals, but what we're
needing right now is some top
flight competition, and that's
exactly what we'll get this
weekend," Heinonen said
After easily winning regionals
last week, Heinonen won't have
any trouble finding competiton
in Berkeley
Florida State will have the
world-leading (44.34) 400-meter
relay team and the nation-lead
ing 1,600-meter relay The
Seminoles, who tied the Ducks
for third last year at the AIAW
nationals, will also be bringing
100-meter hurdler, Carolyn Fai
son, who has consistently been
under 14.00
Chris Costello will have plenty
of competiton with Faison in the
hurdles, but the favorite will
definitely be Stephanie High
tower, the former Ohio State
standout who was ranked fourth
in the world last year
Oregon’s Leann Warren will
be trying to fight off the effects
of a severe, early season virus in
the 800 meters, where she will
Tom Helnonen
meet up with Stanford's Regina
Jacobs (2:05) and California's
Louise Romo (2:04)
"Leann is still feeling sub-par
from that virus, so we re just
going day-by-day for her train
ing and racing," said Heinonen
Javelin throwers, Lynda
Hughes (188-4), Sally Harmon
(169-10) and Roz Rouse (166-2)
will find plenty of competition in
Cal Poly's Karin Smith, the na
tion's top thrower last year, who
has already had a heave of
211-3 this season
Hughes and Harmon will also
head down to Los Angles Sun
day afternoon, to compete in the
UCLA-Pepsi Invitational
‘Low key’ Twilight meet
on tap for men’s squad
The Oregon men's track team takes a break of sorts this
weekend, with most of the Ducks entered in Saturday s
Twilight meet at Hayward Field
The single exception is junior Dean Crouser, who is
scheduled to compete in the discus at the California Relays
on Saturday in Modesto, Calif., and then at the Pepsi Invita
tional in Los Angeles on Sunday
Oregon head coach Bill Dellinger plans to move the rest
of the Ducks around Saturday at the Twilight meet, entering
them in events they don't normally compete in The emphasis
will be “low key,” says Dellinger, because with the Pac-10
championships only a week away, Dellinger doesn't want his
athletes peaking before the conference meet
It may be hard to convince Jim Hill to take it easy
Saturday, as the Oregon junior hasn't lost a race at 1,500 or
5,000 meters this year He will be entered in the Twilight Mile,
along with former Olympic steeplechaser Doug Brown.
ex-Oregon runner Don Clary and Dan Aldridge, formerly of
Cal-lrvine All three are now affiliated with Athletics West
The meet will draw most of its entrants from Oregon, the
Oregon Track Club and Athletics West
