Anthony supports arms freeze

Ross Anthony, a University economics professor and Repub
lican candidate for U S. Congress, 4th District, has added his name
to the growing list of nuclear arms freeze supporters.
Speaking in the EMU Tuesday, Anthony said he shares the
nuclear freeze “sentiment," but a freeze won't guarantee world
peace.
“We must have vigorous dedication to preventing nuclear
war,” Anthony told about 35 students and campaign workers.
He said he agrees with Sen. Mark Hatfield, a fellow Republican
and sponsor of a congressional nuclear freeze. Pres. Ronald
Reagan s recent call for arms talks with the Soviet Union are
encouraging, Anthony said, adding that the president's usual
hard-line stance has been softened by the nationwide support for a
freeze
Although the session was labeled a "nuclear freeze forum,”
Anthony also answered questions on other issues and called for
campaign support
Abortion should remain a woman's personal choice, he said.
"Such a choice is traumatic for the woman involved Each woman
should make the decision for an abortion on her own.”
Anthony denied he was “jumping on the bandwagon" by
announcing his support for a freeze
"I see this as a continuation of my commitment to peace,"
Anthony said “I lived my commitment to peace," citing his
experience in Nepal as an agricultural extension agent and
community health project director.

artistic living
The popularity of the University’s environ
mental residence halts started this year has
triggered the creation of a creative arts halt tor
next fall.
Marge Ramey, assistant housing director
expects the creative arts hall to attract 75 to 90
students, including artists, performers and
those who want to increase their appreciation
of the arts
The new residence hail, which will be locat
ed in Wilcox Ha«, will be open to students of all
class levels and will be co-ed with separate
floors for women and men
Wilcox has a large lounge and a conference
room, and Ramey says she hopes half res
idents will be able to use these rooms for art or
photography displays and other visual or per
forming-arts presentations
Several other special interest hails are
available next year Students can select from
an international studies half, two environmen
tal issues halls and several academic halls.
Last fall, 300 students applied for 65 open
ings m the new environmental hall.
