University Pres. Paul Olum
has scheduled a convocation
today with all classified and
management service personnel
at the University
The meeting is set for 3:30
this afternoon in Room 150,
Geology
No specific agenda has been
set, and staff members may
"bring up anything they want,”
Olum said
The president has asked,
however, that staff notify him if
there are matters of widespread
concern to be discussed. "If
there are a number of items, we
will make-up an agenda to in
sure adequate discussion
time.”
The Wednesday session is
one of several meetings Olum
has called with various seg
ments of the University com
munity to discuss budget cut
proposals and related issues
Olum previuosly met with clas
sified staff and management
personnel last fall
Composer leads
workshop today
Jester Hairston, a conductor,
composer, musician and actor
whose theatrical and musical
career dates back to the early
1930s, will lead a workshop on
Black spirituals today
Sponsored by the University
Black Student Union, the free,
public workshop will be held at 7
p m in the Newman Center
Chapel, 1850 Emerald St Hair
ston’s workshop, based on
Black Americans' musical tradi
tions in the 1800s, is part of the
Black Arts Festival which con
tinues through May
Hairston, 82, earned a music
degree from Tufts University,
Boston, in 1929 He then per
formed in the chorus of the
Broadway show, “Hello Paris.”
Following his work as assistant
conductor of the famed Hall

Johnson Black Choir from
1933-36, Hairston was the
choral arranger for Hollywood
composer and conductor Dimi
tri Tiomkin for 20 years.
The State Department has
sent Hairston as a goodwill am
bassador to Europe, African,
Israel and Mexico. Currently, he
is traveling throughout the Unit
ed States teaching and per
forming
In his workshop, Hairston is
expected to teach the audience
several of his songs and arran
gements, and to talk about the
motive behind the spirituals.
"This isn't a workshop where
the audience sits and listens,”
said Cory Walden, Black Arts
Festival chairman. “It will em
phasize audience pariticipation
and the development of an ap
preciation for Negro' spiri
tuals.”

Majcen speaks
to accountants
Ken Majcen, a personnel
counselor for one of the eight
largest accounting firms in the
world, will speak to a group of
accounting students about
career choice and planning
today in Gilbert Hall.
Majcen works for Ernst and
Whinney a Cleveland based ac
counting firm with 9,000 em
ployees and 118 offices around
the country, including one in
Portland He deals with em
ployees about work related and
personal problems
"Majcen was a succesful
salesman for years before per
sonal problems brought him
down and he changed voca
tions and launched a sucessful
new career," said Craig Peter
son, an account executive for
Ehrig and Associates
A spokesperson for Ernst and
Whinney says that "Majcen
deals with more than just drink
ing problems, spending more
than half his time on a variety of
family troubles."

Hansen has gained through his volunteer
service in local government programs

Election held
for bookstore
Elections for the University
Bookstore Board of Directors
will be held Thursday and Friday
at the Bookstore, Gilbert Hall,
and the EMU.
The Bookstore, an indepen
dent non-profit corporation with
nominal ties to the University, is
managed by an 11-member
Board.
There are 15 candidates for
six positions, all to be held for
two years, this year.
The seven students nominat
ed for the single student-at
large position were Jon Gimre,
Michael Larson, Martin Moll,
Ricky Lee Smithrud, Kevin
Thomas, and Mark Tone.
Dale Penegor and Andy Stor
ment are running for the two
sophomore board positions.
Four graduate students run
ning for the single graduate
student position are Craig E.
Edwards, David Gold, and Holly
McLean.
In addition, Muriel Jackson,
assistant for administration in
the University president's office,
was nominated for the faculty
position, and Fred Wilhelm,
currently representing clas
sified staff on the board, was
re-nominated the same post.
Students may write in can
didates for all six open positions
on the board.
