Psychology master's program
aids business communications
Japanese companies are surpassing Amer
ican companies in safety, effeciency, and worker
motivation. Americans are not taking the change
lightly though, and have instituted such programs
as the University's master's degree sequence in
organizational psychology
The key to bringing these attributes to Amer
ican managerial organization is communication,
according to Prof Harold Hawkins, the program’s
director
By opening the lines of communication
between both coworkers and managerial levels,
students in the program bring Eugene area bu
sinesses newfound efficiency
Recently named by the Governor’s office as a
University program beneficial to economic
development in Eugene, the three-year-old pro
gram offers its graduates practical experience in
the career of their choice — personnel man
agement and consultation.
The program requires the students to com
plete three ”in-company” projects per year,
while also taking graduate courses in psychol
ogy and management.
Hawkins says program applicants come from
a wide variety of undergraduate specializations
and career objectives, including business, psy
chology, sociology, education and community
affairs. This variety is encouraged, and
coursework and project selection are tailored to
individual goals.
Projects to successfully stimulate productivi
ty and motivation have varied widely by company
needs and student interests.
Two- and three-student teams have assessed
company personnel objectives through inter
views and surveys, organized the means to im
prove communication between employees, such
as the Japanese "quality circle,” trained em
ployees in conflict management and role clar
ification, and developed new scheduling and
promotional systems to minimize tension and
accidents.
Applications to enter the program in fall 1982
are available from the Psychology department’s
graduate secretary, and are due May 21.
