FALKLAND ISLANDS (AP) -
British warships bombarded Ar
gentine positions on the Falk
land Islands again Monday in
battle action that
correspondents aboard the
Royal Navy task force called a
prelude to invasion
Brian Hanrahan of the British
Broadcasting Corp reported
from the aircraft carrier Hermes
that a group of ships was de
tached from the war fleet to
shell targets near the Falklands
capital of Stanley "Since the
surface action group returned
to the main force, no other en
gagements have been recorded
today,” he added
An Argentine announcement
late Monday confirmed the Bri
tish reports It said there was a
13-minute barrage directed at
Stanley beginning at 2:47 a m
(1:47 a m EDT) and two British
naval units then shelled the area
around the Stanley airfield for
15 minutes starting at 10 a m
At the United Nations in New
York, Secretary-General Javier
Perez de Cuellar ended his
fourth day of talks with Argen
tine and British diplomats and
acknowledged there had been
little progress
Perez de Cuellar, who has
been meeting separately with
British U N Ambassador Sir
Anthony Parsons and Argentin
a's deputy foreign minister, En
rique Ros, said the talks would
resume T uesday
Parsons told reporters,
"We've covered a lot more
ground and we need more
time,” while Ros said British
military pressure would not
dampen Argentina's desire for a
negotiated settlement
Parsons had said earlier in an
interview with London's
Independent Television News
that he believed "the next 24
hours will be pretty crucial."
In Buenos Aires, Foreign
Minister Nicanor Costa Mendez
told journalists he maintained
"moderate and reasonable
hope" tor a peaceful solution
Informed British military
sources said the requisitioned
liner Canberra with 2,500 British
marines and paratroopers, ac

arrived Monday night off the

Iraq, Iran struggle
over crucial oil port
BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) - Iraq
claimed Monday that its forces
were staging a massive
counter-attack against Iranian
troops trying to recapture the
important oil port of Khorram
shahr in southwest Iran
Thousands of Iranians have
been killed and a large number
taken prisoner, an Iraqi military
communique said
Iran, insisting that its troops
were still advancing, claimed
they liberated Shalamcheh, a
town nine miles east of the Iraqi
border and several miles north
of Khorramshahr It also said
Iraqi trenches and sentry posts
outside the port have been
overrun and Khorramshahr was
nearly surrounded
Baghdad and Tehran each
claimed their respective armies
shot down an enemy warplane
None of the reports could be
independently confirmed since
neither side permits battlefield
coverage by foreign reporters
“Our forces are fighting fierce
battles,' the Iraqi communique
said, claiming the Iranian offen
sive "has been fully destroyed
with thousands of (Iranian) men
killed and a large number
taken prisoner,"
The Iranians said Iranian
forces have demolished more
than 100 Iraqi tanks and ar
mored personnel carriers, while
the Iraqis claimed their jet
bombers and helicopter gun
ships destroyed 23 Iranian tanks
and seven armored personnel
carriers
