Spring game leaves big question unanswered
By Steve Turcotte
Of the Emerald
Oregon football coach Rich Brooks
wanted to establish his top quarterback
by the time the end of spring drills ar
rived
That time has come and gone, and
Brooks has yet to pick his No 1 signal
caller, or the pecking order behind him
Brooks was hoping to get an indication
«
Oregon’s defense put the heat on alumni
quarterback Jack Henderson
who would become the top choice going
into fall drills following his squad s game
with the Oregon alumni Saturday at Aut
zen Stadium But by the time the final gun
had sounded, Brooks was still unsure of
finding any anwers
“I am not pleased with our quarterback
situation right now," Brooks said, fol
lowing the varsity's 24-0 victory over the
alumni. “I still don't know who the No 1
quarterback is yet. I will look at the films
today and make a decision from that."
Saturday, Brooks used his three
healthy quarterbacks — Senior Kevin
Lusk, sophomore Mike Jorgensen and
sophomore Edmund Rivera Jorgensen
got the nod for the starting spot on
Saturday, but he and Lusk both played
extensively, with Rivera coming into the
game in the fourth quarter
It may have been the fact that the Duck
offensive line went up against the likes of
Terry Dion, Neil Elshire and Scott Set
terlund, but the quarterback position for
the Ducks is definitely up in the air
Both Lusk and Jorgensen each
showed signs of being the top man, but
both were plagued by inconsistencies
On the day, Jorgensen completed just
one of two passes for 15 yards and
rushed for 11 more Lusk completed
three of six aerials for 30 yards.
"I felt a little rusty out there,” Lusk
admitted "We weren't as intense as we
needed to be
“I hope that when the Arizona State
game (the Duck opener next fall) rolls
around that we will have one guy (calling
signals),” Lusk said “Everyone wants
one guy As a team, you want to have a
No 1 quarterback.”
Jorgensen agrees with Lusk
"I really don't think all that much about
being the No 1 quarterback, but it would
be nice to have one guy,” Jorgensen
said The sophomore spent last year
alternating at quarterback with Lusk and
injured sophomore Mike Owens. "It's
going to be wide open next fall. I'm just
going to have to go out and work hard
The Ducks showed some good and
bad signs against the alumni Saturday
The defense, which has been
Oregon's trademark the past few sea
sons, was sharp, picking up two inter
ceptions and putting pressure on alumni
signal-caller Jack Henderson
"Our defense finished spring drills
pretty consistent,” Brooks said "The
defense was a a bright spot for us
today.”
Statistically, Harry Billups was the
leading Duck ball carrier, gaining 46
yards, including one burst of 37 yards
Sophomore Todd Bland, who Brooks
had not expected to be a factor this
spring, was impressive in short yardage
situations, gaining 26 yards and scoring
two touchdowns Junior Ladaria John
son picked up 40 yards on nine carries
for the varsity
Henderson completed five passes in
18 tries for 30 yards for the alumni, while
Ed Radcliff picked up 38 yards to lead the
alumni rushing department
The Oregon kicking game, led by
place-kicker Paul Schwabe appears to
be solid
Harry Billups want this way. . .
.. .and then back that-a-way. ..
... on his way to a 37-yard burst.
