Oregon softball team splits twinbill
By Paul Danzar
Otttf EmatmM
The Oregon softball team
showed the first signs of life in
more than three games Monday,
posting a 2-0 softball win over
Portland State to salvage a split of
a home double-header
The Ducks were coming off
being swept by the Vikings in
Portland on Friday.
After giving up seven runs and
committing six errors while being
shut out for the third straight time
in Monday's first game, the
women got things in order during
a team meeting between games,
then got down to playing a much
improved game in the nightcap
The Vikings had kept the
pressure on the Oregon defense,
forcing countless mistakes while
knocking them into a coma with
an 18-run barrage in three games.
The Ducks finally found the secret
in the second game Monday —
hitting the ball on the ground and
making their opponents play
defense.
In the second inning, after go
ing 22 straight frames without a
run against the Viks, the Ducks
began to put filings together
Back-to-back throwing errors
by PSU shortstop Patti Perkins, on
grounders by Katie Hickey and
Deanna Eckelman, put Ducks on
first and third with no outs.
Designated hitter Karen Vipond
followed with a single up the
middle to score Hickey and the
drought was over
The Ducks scored again in the
fourth inning. Another Perkins
error put Eckelman on base. After
Krista Parent struck out, freshman
Molly Barnes drove a single up the
middle to score Eckelman
"I was afraid we were in a rut
and that we might not get out of
it,” said Oregon mentor Charles
Sylvester "That’s why I treated it
(Game 2) like the seventh game of
the World Series.”
The offense allowed the Ducks
to climb out of the rut, but it was
the pitching of freshman Janet
Wright that made the win stand
up. Wright held the Viks to just two
hits, one off the bat of Mary Ross,
who blasted five triples in the four
games.
Two of the three-baggers came
in Monday's first game as Ross
came up with three of the Viks'
five hits off the Ducks Stephanie
Heisler, and PSU ran up the
score.
The Ducks take a 6-7-1 record
into Tuesday’s doubie-header at
Oregon State.
