Beres shelves sports for news
After seven years of directing
the University’s sports information
office, George Beres says his new
position — writing for the Univer
sity News Bureau — is “a
blessing "
"I’ll be doing work I think I do
well," Beres says, "and I’m happy
to have something I can do tor the
University.”
The change has been a sudden
one tor Beres. An avid bicyclist,
he collided with a car on his way
to work last summer. Three
operations, endless rounds ot
doctor visits and heavy mediqa
tion filled his summer Still with
him are "an eye problem and a
lack of energy," confining him to
half-time employment. Beres
says.
When he returned to his post
this fall, Beres was running the
entire operation in the absence of

handle
"I did the best I could, " he
says. Carefully rationing his time,
Beres did advance work for three
football games but finally con
fronted his difficulty in fulfilling job
obligations
“It became apparent to me that
I could not go through another
football season .”
Beres offered his own solution
to step down from his post “I felt
it was in my own best interests
and in the best interests of the
University "

Hellyer of Drake University, has
taken over the position

and something he calls the 'mys
tique of the sports information
