Women take on OSU
Ducks depth
should defeat
Oregon State
By Mike Riplinger
Of On Bmmrmtd
The Oregon women's track
team, on the strength of its depth
alone, should find Saturday's
meet with the Oregon State
Beavers little more than a warm
up for next weekend's big meet in
Montana
The Beavers have some good
athletes, but they don't compare
as a team to the powerful Ducks,
who are preparing to defend their
regional crown at the Northwest
Women's Collegiate Sports
Association championships in
Missoula May 7 and 8
"Oregon State will be much like
Washington this year,' said Ore
gon coach Tom Heinonen, whose
team beat the Huskies 79-47
"They've got some national-class
athletes who II push us in several
events, but overall they can't
match our depth
Oregon will be trying to keep
their hopes for national dual-meet
championship alive by beating the
Beavers After their close, earty
season loss to last year's national
champion Tennesse. and their
wins over UCLA and Arizona, the
Ducks have a shot at the title if
they can perform well against
OSU
But the Beavers led by their
heptathlete Sonya Crowther will
be trying to put a hurdle in the
Ducks' path Crowther set the
OSU record last week in the
heptathalon and is entered in the
long jump (19'/4). the 100-meter
hurdles (14 18), and the high
jump (6-0)
Asa Pennington, the Northwest
100 champion last year, should
be strong in the sprints Connie
Case will give the Ducks compe
tition in the 1,500 (4:30 1) and
3.000 (9 34 16) OSU will be hurt
though, with sprinter/long jumper
Colleen Gibson out because of an
injury
But Oregon's depth will be too
much for the shallow Beavers
The Duck's real competition won't

be so much against the Beavers,
as against the clock, with Ducks
struggling to qualify for the NCAA
meet Oregon already has 13
athletes qualified in 23 events
The team score against the
Beavers will probably be further
apart than it normally would
because Heinonen, who usually
moves his athletes around to
different events to make for better
competition against weaker
teams, will have his athletes in
their specialties so they can meet
the NCAA qualifying times
Cathy Hayes leads the Ducks
with the fastest times in the
nation in both the 3,000 and
5,000 Leann Warren, who also
has a national best time in the
800, will run against the Beavers
after missing last week's meet
against Arizona because of a
virus
