    Benefit for music tour scheduled
By Diane Wlnocur
OtttfBmmraU
Financial difficulties are but one of a long
line of obstacles the Oregon Wind Ensem
ble faced in preparing for a May perfor
mance tour of Japan.
The group lost the financial backing of a
sponsoring company, which sent the
members scrambling to raise funds on their
own, according to ensemble director
Wayne Bennett.
The ensemble, still doing a little fancy
footwork to meet expenses, is preparing to
board a flight to Japan May 10
And to lessen the pressure of their April
26 deadline for funding, Bennett retracted
his "no fundraisers” policy, he says A
benefit concert, with proceeds to be dis
tributed evenly among the student travelers,
will be held tonight at 7:30 in Beall Hall.
The Oregon Wind Ensemble and Friends
Concert includes a sampling of works
planned for the group's tour, as well as
performances by "Lab Band 1,” the Emer
ald Dixieland Band and a jazz flutist
The group received an invitation this fall
from the All-Japan Bandmasters Associa
tion requesting that they represent the
United States at the Association's 10-day,
high school clinic this spring, Bennett says
At that time, Yamaha — the clinic's spon
sor — promised to foot the bill for the
group's room, board and ground transpor
tation in Japan, leaving students to pay only
their airfare, Bennett says
Although the airfare strained many
student budgets, October auditions for the
touring group still met with stiff competition
he says
Gradually, the plans started to come
together a bit more After Yamaha can
celled sponsorship plans, the bandmaster
association took responsibility for locating
Japanese families to house the students,
but with ground travel as well as airfare to
cover, student costs totaled $1.255, Bennett
says.
7 want to see the cultural
differences and the musical
abilities... ’ Ruth Aberle
Four musicians who thought they could
raise the money by the April 26 deadline
dropped out, forcing Bennett to rewrite
many individual parts, he says.
While most of the 44 ensemble members
paid their own fees, some obtained inter
est-free loans from the alumni association
to be repaid through workstudy jobs next
year
If all goes as planned, the 56 member
entourage of student musicians, School of
Music faculty and administrators, guest
soloists, a cultural consultant, and others
will depart for Japan May 10 for two weeks
The tour includes five days at the Band
master’s annual clinic, a six-city concert, a
workshop tour of Japanese technical high
schools and colleges, and a professional
recording session with Sony.
The students say they are looking forward
to their trip.
Clarinetist Ruth Aberle says she anxious
ly awaits the group’s visit to Musashino
Academy of Music — a world famous con
servatory — where the ensemble will attend
classes and perform.
Another of the planned events that Aberle
awaits are the high school tours where the
ensemble will explore the towns as well as
the schools.
“I want to see the cultural differences and
the musical abilities of the youngsters. Their
programs are really different there.” Aberle
says.
Oboe player Dave Kisling says he looks
forward to the homestays with Japanese
families.
“I don’t know what to expect,” he says.
Past wind ensembles chosen for the
honor include California State University at
Fullerton and UCLA. The group was select
ed during a visit last January from conduc
tor Toshio Akiyama, vice president of the
bandmasters' association and conductor of
the Sony Concert Band.
