Luckily for Oregon, there are few Washington States floating around the collegiate track scene. Oregon's opponent this Saturday at Hayward Field, Louisiana State, certainly doesn’t fit into the same category as the Cougars. The Tigers have only four “big meet” competitors. Joe Maciejczyk. the second-ranked collegian in the shot put last spring, has a best of 66-0%. Clyde Bishop, the second ranked prep in the nation last year at 100 meters (10.1), will be in the 100 and 200, and long jumper/triple jumper Edward Lloyd (25-3%, 53-4) should have no problems winning his events The Tigers also have freshman Greg Duplantis. the prep pole vault record-holder with a mark of 17-11 %. Oregon will again be without its top horizontal jumper, as Lamar Hurd is still hampered by a bad hamstring, and inter mediate hurdler Don Ward's knee is still tender. Jerome Walker is still recovering from hepatitis, but sprinter Bart McGillivray and weightman Kent Landerholm have Photo by Bob Batmr Froth Stormyr was a surprise winnar In the javelin hat weekend against Washington State. recovered from the flu. The two teams faced each other last year at the LSU In vitational, which attracted eight teams to Baton Rouge. The Ducks easily won and the meet gave Oregon coach Bill Del linger a chance for a first-hand look at many of the Tigers But Saturday's meet will be the first dual competition between the two squads, and its likely to be a bit of a shock for LSU. The Tigers are extremely weak in a number of events, including the javelin, discus, 800 and 5,000 Following the regular meet, Alberto Salzar returns to Hayward field with a world-class field to compete in the "KPNW/Kendall Datsun Invita tional” 10,000-meter race The race will feature the four-event world record-holder Henry Rono and Sulieman Nyambui the Tanzanian from the Univer sity of Texas-El Paso, who holds numerous NCAA championship titles Regular competition will begin at 12:30 p.m with the hammer throw, and the first running event will start at 2 p m. Tickets are on sale at the University Athletic Department ticket office and at the gate the day of the meet spo rtf olio First year Oregon coach Charles Sylvester has never seen a UO softball game But, It the weather holds, he will get his chance Friday when the Duck women open a five-date home schedule with a double header against Portland State at 2 30 p m The games will be played at the field on the south end of Hayward Field Sophomore Stephanie Heister who did not pitch an inning last year, will be on the mound in the first game for the Ducks and sophomore Marcy Sowa. 3-3 in 1981. will pitch the second game The rest of the Duck lineup according to Sylvester will consist of sophomore Susan Tuggle catching, sophomore Karen Vipond at first base, junior Krista Parent at second sophomore Katie Hickey at third, and senior Vicki Hogan at shortstop In the outfield the Ducks will have Alice Merchant in left, senior June Liu in center and Ireshman Deanna Eckelman in right The Ducks are coming off of a S-19 sea son , during which they played PSU five times without a victory The Duck women will see PSU eight times this spring if the weather (pronounced YEAR-OS) Gyros is a lean blend of specially selected meats It is lightly seasoned and cooked to sear the outside so that the juice and flavor are sealed inside.
