Duck-Bruin dual — it’s a ‘toss-up’ Throwing events crucial to Oregon hopes By Jeff Dickerson Of lha Emarakf No two women's track teams have fought such close battles over the past two years as the Oregon Ducks and the UCLA Bruins Last year UCLA beat Oregon 70-57 in Eugene and went on to claim the No. 1 spot in the national dual-meet rankings, with the Ducks second in the final rankings The year before, Oregon edged the Bruins 66-61, claiming the 1980 dual-meet crown Because the two schools have decided advantages in certain races, Oregon coach Tom Heinonen believes this year's meet should be as close as ever, with the winner being the team whose weight people are ready to throw. "We might be spotting UCLA 28 points in the 100, 200 and two relays," Heinon en says. "We hoped to make up most of that deficit in the distances We should split points between the jumps and hur dles, which means the meet could boil down to who has the best day in the throws (javelin, discus and shot put)." UCLA javelin-throwers Jacque Nelson (171-10) and Susie Ray (164-7) seem to be in a pivotal position for the Bruins The javelin is Oregon's strongest throw ing event and a possible big-point event for the Ducks If Nelson and Ray can break into the top three, it would be a serious blow to the Ducks’ chances at winning the meet. Oregon is capable of sweeping the event, but the Ducks will need top throws from Lynda Hughes (184-3), Sally Harmon (177-10) and Roz Rouse (166-2) to do it. Where UCLA has the decided edge is in the sprints, where the Bruins could conceivably score 28 unanswered points Jeannette Bolden (11.18, 23.74) and Florence Griffith (11.23, 22.81) provide firepower in the 100- and 200-meters, and Missy Gerald (12.14) should complete the sweep in the 100-meters, while Lashon Ned (nt) gives the Bruins the chance to take all three places in the 200-meters. Oregon’s Grace Bakari (53.1) should break up any threat of a Bruin sweep in the 400-meters, but UCLA’s Ned (52.7) and Artise Emerson (52.49) may get a majority of the points in the event. Both relays, because of UCLA’s depth in sprints, should go to the Bruins UCLA (44.48, 3:40.47) should breeze to victory in both the 400-meter and mile relays over Oregon (46 92, 3:46.04). Oregon’s edge is in the distance events. Leann Warren (1:59.63, 4:09.63) should win the 800- and 1,500-meters, but should be pushed by Linda Goen (4:12.9) of the Bruins in the 1,500-meters Goen (9:30 06) has an Photo by Bob Baker Linda Hugh** heaved the Javelin 184-3 last weekend to set a new Oregon record. outside shot at placing in the 3,000-meters, but the trio of Eryn Forbes (9:17.5), Kathy Hayes (9:07.94) and Rosa Gutierrez (9:28.26) has an excellent chance of sweeping that event. The Ducks will look to Lexie Miller (57.82), Lisa Nicholson (1:01.99) and Robin Pate (1:01.79) to sweep the 400-meter hurdles, but Bruin 800-meter standout Brenda Peterson, who does not have a time in the event, has a chance at grabbing second place. Last year the Bruins were called "the impossible team,” the coach says, but he says this team is just as good as that one. Photos by Dave Finn 1981 NCAA all-around champion Jim Hartung. ..
