Parliament calls for
Thatcher to quit
LONDON (AP) - Prime Min
ister Margaret Thatcher told
shouting opposition members
of Parliament on Tuesday she
would not resign over the Falk
land Islands crisis, and put an
embargo on Argentine beef and
other products
But with mounting criticism of
her failure to avert the Argentine
seizure of the islands, panic
gripped the London Stock Ex
change and the pound tumbled
amid fears the crisis could force
the Conservative leader out of
office
The British assault ship Fear
less steamed out of Portsmouth
harbor to join a 40-vessel British
armada whose leading aircraft
carriers, Hermes and Invincible,
sailed Monday on the two-week
voyage to the South Atlantic

ister Gen Alfredo Saint Jean
told reporters the Argentine
government will defend the
Falklands "at any cost." The
government continued to rein
force its garrisons on the is
lands, with a reported 300 sol
diers plus a dozen trucks and
various artillery pieces
Pentagon spokesman Henry
Catto told reporters in
Washington that the U S
government was steering a
middle course in the dispute
West Germany and Switzerland
sided with Britain and halted
arms sales to Argentina, and the
Common Market urged Argen
tina to withdraw from the Falk
lands
In Moscow, the Soviet news
agency Tass accused Britain of
preparing for possible aggres
sion" against Argentina, but
made no mention of any Soviet
action
Having staked her political
future on regaining the remote
British colony of 1,800 inhabi
tants that was seized Friday,
Thatcher answered calls for her
resignation by telling the House
of Commons
