Surprise entries lead WSU over Duck trackmen
Women have easy time
with Cougars, 97-25
By John Hmaty
Otthm BmmmU
Oregon track coach Bill Dellinger believed the
outcome of Saturday 's dual meet with Washington State,
last year's top-ranked dual team, would hinge on the 800,
1,500 and 5,000 meters
If Oregon could do well in those three events, and the
other events went as expected, Dellinger figured his
Ducks could pull off an upset against John Chaplin's
Cougars
Dellinger looked like a psychic through the 800 and
1,500, as David Mack (1:50.11) and Jim Hill (3:41 33)
posted impressive victories, respectively
But then the intermediate hurdles and the 200 meters
rolled around, events which looked like sure victories,
and Chaplin turned in a pair of surprise entries
Chaplin entered Javier Moracho, seventh in the 1980
Olympic high hurdles, in the intermediates, and the
Spaniard easily won in 53 11 an event that Oregon
appeared to be in a position to go 1-2 on the pre-meet
form charts
While Moracho's win hurt the Ducks, it was Chris
Whitlock's win in the 200 that put the final touches on a
90-73 WSU win
Oregon's women had an easier time of it with a 97-25
whitewash over the Cougar women
Whitlock, known more for his abilities in the 400
(third in the Pac-10 last year), powered past Oregon's
George Walcott in the last 70 meters to win a slow 200 in
21 71
Minus Whitlock, the Cougars could very well have
been swept in the 200
Obviously, the turnaround in points was crucial
And although he didn't say it before the meet,
Dellinger seemed to have an idea tucked in the back of
his mind that Oregon might have problems in the inter
mediates and 200
"I wasn’t surprised with the results in the inter
mediate hurdles," Dellinger explained "And the loss in
the 200 was no big surprise with Whitlock in there "
The majority of the meet went according to form, with
the Cougars piling up points in the jumps, vault and high
hurdles and the Ducks winning three of the four weight
events, both relays and the 100
David Mack, altar winning Ufa 800-matan In 1:50.11, had a run-in with rival Sotlrlos Moutsanaa of Washington Stats.
Mack, who ctaimad Mouttanat mlbowsd him In ths UnaI turn, pushad tha Cougar runnar following tha raca.
In fact, WSU outscored Oregon 31-5 in the jumps
and vault, including taking the top two places in all but
the high jump
Dellinger pointed to the absence of Oregon's top
horizontal jumper — sophomore Lamar Hurd — and
leading intermediate hurdler — sophomore Don Ward —
as being a definite factor in the loss
"I think one factor that affected us was Hurd and
Ward hurting," Dellinger said
"If those two had been in the meet, I think it might
have turned out differently," Dellinger analyzed. "They
(WSU) do have a very good dual meet team, but I'm not
disappointed in this meet "
Freshman Kathy Hayes and sophomore Lynda
Hughes stole the show for the Duck women. Hayes
scored a victory and school record in the 3,000, while
Hughes won the javelin with a school-record 184-3. The
only battle Hayes faced was with the weather on the way
to posting a 9:07.74 mark — more than 7 seconds better
than the record set last year by Leann Warren.
Warren herself turned in a time of 2:03.11 in the 800,
leading an Oregon sweep in that event. In all. the Ducks
swept six of 13 events and won all but one event — the
high jump.
