Timbers come to Autzen
Smoothing out the rough edges will be
coach Vic Crowe's aim when the Portland
Timbers bring their North American Soccer
League act to Autzen Stadium Sunday for
a preseason clash with the Edmonton Dril
lers
Crowe has not yet said who wifi be in the
Portland lineup for the 4 p.m kickoff, but he did
say that he will be taking a dose look at how his
squad blends together as they close out the
preseason and gear up for the regular-season
opener next Friday at Seattle
In their only other outing of the preseason,
the Timbers defeated Edmonton 1-0 on mid
fielder Brian Gant's 25-yard blast last Sunday in
Victoria. British Columbia
Crow used that first contest to get a look at
his personnel, playing all 17 players that were
activated tor the game. Injured defender Berme
Fagan was the only Timber who didn't see
action Fagan will be sidelined again this week
Last Sunday Crowe went with a 4-3-3 lineup
with a starting lineup which had second-year
Timber Oragan Radovich in goal, Willie Dona
chie, Gary Collier, Young Jeung Cho and Gienn
Myernick in defense. John Pratt, John Bain and
Gant in midfield, and Willie Anderson. Ron
Futcher and Dale Mitchell up front
Futcher. who was the all-time leading
scorer at Minnesota when the franchise folded
after last season, is one of several new faces on
the Timber squad this spring Other newcomers
include goalkeeper Bill Irwin who is likely to see
action Sunday, midfield rookie Greg Ion who is
back from a serious knee injury sufferred in a
reserve game last summer, and midfielder Carl
Strong who came to the Timbers from Atlanta
The Timbers will be sponsoring a coaches
clinic Saturday night at Harris Hall in the Lane
County Courthouse at 7:30 p m Timbers Gant,
Chris Heilenkamp and Ion will be on hand
Last spring at Autzen the Timbers defeated
San Diego, the team they eventually fell to in the
playoffs

Oregon's woman's softball loam will swing into action Friday whsn they begin play at
the Southern Oregon tournament in Ashland
The Ducks enter the 1982 campaign under first year coach Charles Sylvester hoping to
improve their attack and their 9-19 record from 1981
The Ducks will compete in a round-robin group which includes Western Oregon.
Oregon Tech, and Central Oregon First place teams from each of the two groups will meet

Sylvester said this tournament will give him a better idea of where his team is headed as

The Rams vacated the Coliseum in 1980 and the Raiders tried to move in. but the NFL
