Describing it as "one of the
finest 10,000 meter fields ever
assembled on the American
continent," former Oregon run
ner Alberto Salazer Tuesday
outlined plans for the
KPNW Kendall Datsun Invita
tional 10,000-Meter Race
scheduled for Saturday. April 10
at Hayward Field
Speaking at an early morning
press conference at the Valley
River Inn. Salazar had high
praise for the field being as
sembled for the race that will
follow the Oregon-Lousiana
State men's dual track meet
Along with Salazar, marathon
world record holder and holder
of the second fastest
10,000-meter time for an Amer
ican. leading the field is four
event world record holder Henry
Rono from Kenya The former
Washington State star holds the
3.000- meter, 5,000-meter,
10.000- meter and steeplechase
marks.
Salazar reported that Rono
should be ready for the race.
"He gets into shape very easi
ly.”
Also heading the field will be
14-time NCAA champion runner
Suleiman Nyambui from the
University of Texas at El Paso.
The Tanzanian native was the
Olympic silver medalist at the
1980 Moscow games in the
5.000- meters.
Nyambui's college teammate
and world record holder for
10.000- meter on a road service,
Michael Musyoki of Kenya, will
run as well.

"I've said this before, but I
think that this is potentially the
best 10,000-meters field I've
ever seen,” said Salazar
Salazar, who works for the
Nike Corporation, sees this race
as just the beginning in a series
of world-class competitions to
be held in Eugene. "This is just
the first event, but I would like to
see it become a continuing
thing, with maybe 1,500 or 5,000
races included as well.”
Salazar, who has pledged to
help the Oregon track and field
cause, says that all proceeds for
the event will go the Oregon
Athletic Department. "There are
a lot of things that could be
done to bring people to meets,”
he said "In these hard econ
omic times, you have to go out
and sell track, even in Eugene.”
The athletes he contacted,
"jumped at the chance to run in
Eugene.” said Salazar.
