In Houston, flight operations
director Glynn Lunney said the
spacecraft survived its trip bet

flight last November
"STS-3 (flight 3) was a very
powerful success," he said, and
added that nothing stands in the
way of "flying payloads for pay

FDA approves
genital herpes drug
WASHINGTON
The first drug to ease suffer
ing from genital herpes should
be available in drugstores in 30
days, following its approval
Tuesday by the Food and Drug
Administration
Up to 20 million Americans
are afflicted with genital herpes,
a painful venereal disease that,
unlike syphilis and gonorrhea,
cannot be cured
Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes, the
FDA commissioner, said the
new prescription drug, acyclovir
ointment, ‘‘is not a cure for
herpes virus infections,'' but is
"a step forward” in treatment
Genital herpes is caused by a
highly contagious virus that
usually is transmitted during
sexual intercourse It causes
genital sores that blister and
form ulcers The sores heal but
may recur for unknown reasons,
and doctors tell people to re
frain from sex while they have

active infections
The FDA said the ointment
wilt reduce virus growth and
shorten the healing time for
sores in patients with initial in
fections In tests, it also sig
nificantly decreased the pain in
men. but not in women.
The ointment will be available
by prescription in about a month
under the brand name Zovirax
by the Burroughs Wellcome Co.
of Research Triangle Park, N C.
Most cases of genital herpes
are caused by the herpes
simplex virus type 2 — one of the
family of five herpes viruses that
cause a wide range of ailments
including chicken pox. shin
gles. infectious mononucleosis,
cold sores and even birth
defects
The FDA, which took only
eight months to approve the
drug, said it "did not show im
portant benefits" for people
with recurrent outbreaks. How
ever. the drug's developers
believe it has promise for all
sufferers from genital herpes
Recession slowing,
but not yet over
WASHINGTON
A key government forecasting
gauge indicated Tuesday that
the recession, though probably
slowing, is not yet over Trea
sury Secretary Donald Regan
conceded as much, telling
Congress that the economy
continues in the grip of the
second recession in two years "
Regan spoke confidently of
recovery this summer. And
private economists generally
echo that forecast, though with
less apparent confidence
But a 0.3 percent February
decline in the government's In
dex of Leading Indicators, a
report designed to show future
economic trends, seemed to in
dicate recovery was hardly at
hand
The February decline, the
10th straight monthly drop, was
considerably smaller than the
0 8 percent and 1.2 percent
drops in December and Jan
uary
But Commerce Secretary
Malcolm Baldrige implied that
February's index will probably
be revised downward when later
figures are available
Regan, testifying before the
House Banking Committee, said
the overall economy would turn
up slightly in the April-June
quarter although still remaining
“not very strong.”
He said that July-September
growth — as measured by infla
tion-adjusted gross national
product — should be at a
relatively brisk annual rate of
4 Vj-tO-5 percent
