NCAA Basketball Analysis
Ewing awes basketball futurists
MEW ORLEANS (AP) — It was like watching a house
bum to the ground, or slowing down to gawk at multicar
accident on the highway.
Patrick Ewing possesses an awesome, even fright
ening. power that draws eyes to him His presence is
demanding. It demands attention.
With some 61,000 in attendance at the Louisiana
Superdome — and another several million watching on
national television - Ewing gave the performance of a
lifetime last Monday night He gave millions a glimpse
into the future - of what might be the next year, or the
year after as he continues to learn his trade at George
town University.
in a losing effort in the national collegiate basketball
championships, the 7-foot freshman who began life in
Jamaica gave the basketball-watching public
something to look forward to.
Ewing had 23 points and 11 rebounds against North
Carolina. He committed zero turnovers, blocked two
shots legally against perhaps the best frontline in
college, and he had three steals. He shot 10 of 15 from
the floor, a percentage of 66.6 percent.
In the first seven minutes of the game. Ewing was
whistled for goaltending four times. He batted away one
shot by North Carolina center Sam Perkins from at least
two feet above the rim.
“We tried to establish a consciousness of his pres
ence under the basket,” Thompson, the Georgetown
coach, said.
The presence took little establishing, but what as
tonished Tar Heels Coach Dean Smith was Ewing's
offensive capabilities.
"I was amazed at Pat Ewing,” Smith said. “He has not
shot that well in tapes that I watched. Sam had a hand
up on him, and he still made them.
“Our team won’t be intimidated against anybody, but
not only is Ewing a great shotblocker, he made some
shots that showed he could play offense,” Smith said.
“That’s the teaching of John.”
