Few big names,
but Ducks have
running depth

This Is ths first of two reports on
ths Oregon men's track and
field team and Its preparation
for an assault on the Pacific 10
Conference title. Today, the
Duck runners are profiled. Part
two will appear Friday.
Down through the years, the
likes of Dan Kelly, Mack Robin
son, Bill Dellinger, Otis Davis,
Steve Prefontaine and Alberto
Salazar have left quite a running
legacy at Oregon
The 1982 version of the
Ducks' running troupe will not
feature too many big names, but
a lot of solid runners as Oregon
coaches hope to get more
points in running events this
year, especially the sprints
"We have much more depth
in the sprints than we've had
since 1977," says sprint coach
Dennis Whitby. "We've ex
changed (George) Walcott for
(Larry) Bradley (who graduated)
in the open events, and we
should be stronger in the relays
I think everyone has improved
over last year, so we should
have at least one man in each
event who has the potential to
do quite well in the Pac-10
meet."
With the exception of Bradley,
the Ducks return all of last
year's top sprinters With Wal

and he will run in both the 400
and 1,600-meter relay. Walker is
fourth on the Ducks' all-time
100-meter list at 10.56, and
James has bests of 10 65 for
