Tarheels finally win it all
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -
James Worthy won the duel of
dunks with Georgetown's 7-foot
freshman Patrick Ewing, and
Dean Smith won the only prize
missing from his long and stor
ied career as coach at North
Carolina — the NCAA basketball
championship.

Ewing was the rookie in the
spotlight Monday night, but it
was Michael Jordan, also a
freshman, who put the finishing
touches on North Carolina's
finest moment. Jordan's 18-foot
jumper from the left side with 15
seconds left gave the Tar Heels
a 63-62 victory over George
town.
"I’m very grateful to my
players." said «n emotionally
drained Smith. "This is one of
the toughest teams we have
played all year. We feel fortun
ate to have won it on the last
shot."
Worthy scored a career high
28 points and stole the show
from Ewing, who had 23

could and the kids tried hard

The victory lifted a weight
from the shoulders of Smith,'
who had taken six previous
North Carolina teams to the
Final Four without a champion
ship
Worthy clamped the lid on
North Carolina's victory when
Georgetown’s Fred Brown
tossed him an errant pass with
about 10 seconds left Worthy
was by himself when he took the
pass, and when he took off
down the court, he was fouled
He missed both free throws with
two seconds left, but that was
academic North Carolina would
not be denied its moment of
glory

Womens Track
The Oregon women s track team will
bring a 1 -1 dual record into its dual meet
with Washington State Saturday after a
70-66 loss to Tennessee and a 90-46 win
over Stanford during the break
Top Oregon performances in the
double-dual meet at Stanford Included
Leann Warren s double-win in the 1500
(4 20 0) and 800 (2:05 5). Eryn Forbes
5.000 win (16 09 2) a one-two finish in
the tavelin (Sally Harmon at 169-3 and
transfer Ro* Rouse at 162-7). Grace
Bakari s victory in the 400 (54 05). and a
lifetime best of 9 23 0 m Kathy Hayes
third-place 3.000 finish
In the non-scoring Golden Bear Meet
of Champions March 27 in Berkeley.
Calif . Warren set a school record of
9 15 3 to with the 3 .000
Against Tennessee the 1981 national
collegiate champion, the Ducks weren't
particularly sharp but held on to make it
close before being edged out. 70-66
Softball
The Oregon softball team opens its
1982 season at the Southern Oregon
invitational in Ashland Friday and
Saturday
The Ducks 9-19 last year have a new
head coach Charles Sylvester and a
stronger pitching squad over last year s
group Stephanie Heisler who missed
the 81 campaign because of injury, will
make her debut tor the Ducks on the
mound
Men's Track
The Oregon men s track team won a
tour-way meet with Fresno State UC
Santa Barbara and Southern Oregon
State State College Oregon outscore
second-place Fresno State 233-220 by
winning 15 ot the meet s 19 events
Junior weightman Dean Crouser led
the Oregon assault with a personal
record ot 66-7 in the shot put
The Ducks are using this week to
prepare tor the defending national dual
meet champion Washington State
Cougars who come to Hayward Field lor
a Saturday meet
Golf
The Oregon men s golf team returns
to California this week to compete in the
Fresno State Classic. April 1-3
The Ducks are coming oft a second
place finish last weekend at the North
ern California Collegiate in Stockton
Calif after leading that tourney going
into the final round
Oregon coach Jen Ferguson admits
that youth may be the reason the Ducks
have fallen short in last week s loss and
in earlier losses Yet he believes this
young team, consisting of two juniors,
five sophomores and a freshman should
be one of the beat he has ever had
