The old-timers steal the show
HOLLYWOOD (AP) - Henry Fonda,
who played an aging professor afraid of
dying in "On Golden Pond,” won the
Oscar as best actor of 1981 at the 54th
Academy Awards on Monday night,
and his co-star, Katharine Hepburn,
won the Oscar as best actress
The 54th annual awards proved fes
tive, despite occasional showers that
forced some stars to wear raincoats
over their glamorous formal wear
The crowd of 2,500 outside the Los
Angeles Music Center greeted their
favorite stars with cheers — with one of
the biggest ovations going to Jane
Fonda, a best supporting actress
nominee and daughter of Henry Fonda,
a nominee and sentimental favorite in
the best actor category
For the 76-year-old Fonda, it was his
first Oscar for acting It was the
72-year-old Hepburn’s fourth — a
record number for acting in a leading
role. She also won for “Morning Glory,"
"Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner,” and
"The Lion In Winter."
Meanwhile, "Chariots of Fire,” the
story of two runners in the 1924 Olym
pic Games, received the Oscar for best
picture, in addition to Oscars for best
original screenplay, best original score
and best costumn design
The British film that had won critical
acclaim had not been considered
among top contenders for best picture
of 1981. It told of the competition
between two runners — one a Jew from
Oxford, the other a Scottish missionary
Maureen Stapleton, who played
crusading Communist Emma in
"Reds,” and Sir John Gielgud, a gen
tleman’s gentleman in "Arthur," won
Oscars for supporting roles
The 56-year-old Stapleton, a screen
and stage veteran previously nominat
ed three times in the supporting
category, clutched the Oscar and said.
“I’m thrilled, happy, delighted —
sober ”
She promised to be brief, then
thanked Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton
and the rest of the "Reds" cast and
crew, her hometown of Troy, N Y, her
children and friends "and everybody I
ever met in my entire life ”
Gielgud was nominated for an Oscar
for "Beckett" in 1964 The veteran
English actor was the only candidate
for supporting actor who was not in the
audience at the awards ceremony
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" took an
early lead with four technical awards
Steven Spielberg's fast-paced, tongue
in-cheek adventure film patterned after
the serials of the 1940s won Oscars for
sound, editing, art direction and visual
effects
Warren Beatty was a winner for his
direction of "Reds," marking the
second year in a row that a star took a
directorial award; last year Robert
Redford won for “Ordinary People "
“Reds" also was judged best cinema

“On Golden Pond," in addition to its
best actor and actress awards,
received an Oscar as best adapted
screenplay
"Mephisto," a Hungarian film about
an actor's rise in Nazi Germany, was
awarded the Oscar as the best foreign
film. “Arthur's Theme" from “Ar
thur" won as best original song
“An American Werewolf in London"
won the award for best makeup Best
documentary feature went to “Gen
ocide" and best documentary short
was given to “Close Harmony " Best
animated short and best live action
short went to "CRAC" and "Violet,"
respectively
Actor John Travolta presented this
year's special Oscar to Barbara Stan
wyck for her long and distinguished
acting career
After a standing ovation, she thanked
the film crews she worked with and
added a special tribute to the late Wil
liam Holden, whose career she helped
start in 1938's "Golden Boy "
