Senate seeks deficit cuts
WASHINGTON (AP) - A
Senate Republican leader says
Pres Reagan will have to yield
on at least two of the three main
proposals in Congress for
reducing the nearly $100 billion
deficit in his 1983 budget
Reagan, despite the adminis
tration's projection of a $96 4
billion deficit next year, has
vowed he will not accept a tax
increase, reduced cost-of-living
increases in Social Security or a

But Senate Finance Commit
tee Chairman Robert Dole, R
Kan., said in an interview
broadcast Sunday that the
president can hope to keep only
one of those areas untouched in
any compromise with law
makers
"He may have to give on one,
compromise on one and retain
one," Dole said in an interview
taped earlier by Independent
Television News and broadcast
on its "From the Editor's Desk"
program “I think he's going to
have to give on defense spend
ing "
Dole made the prediction as
he. Senate Budget Committee
Chairman Pete Domenici, R
N M.t and Majority Leader
Howard Baker, R-Tenn ,
planned to meet with Democra
tic leaders this week in an effort
to find a bipartisan proposal for
submitting to Reagan
"If we can reach some gener
al agreement — not necessarily
on every detail — and go to the
president with it, I think you're
going to find the president very
accomodating," Dole said
Reagan has said he is willing
to allow Congress to cut federal
social programs further, but
lawmakers and many of the
president's aides concede that
is not likely to occur because of
the deep reductions made there
last year
The White House on Saturday
rejected a congressional
proposal to clamp a two-year
freeze on cost-of-living in
creases in Social Security ben
efits
And Murray Weidenbaum,
chairman of Reagan's Council
of Economic Advisers, reaf
firmed Sunday the administra
tion's opposition to any
tampering with the three-year,
25 percent cut in income taxes
Reagan won from Congress in
1981
"I don't think eliminating the
third year tax cut is a good
answer to the deficit question,"
he said on CBS' "Face the Na
tion" program "It's important to
maintain continuity, certainty, in
our tax system introduced in last
year's tax bill "
