    Tourney
Continued from Paga 10
The women’s tournament is
beginning to resemble the
men's tourney The women
have their first round games on
the home courts of the seeded
teams in the different regions,
the East, Mideast, Midwest and
West
Then, after the first round is
complete, the teams advance to
regional tournaments at differ
ent sites Knoxville, Tenn., in the
Mideast, Rustin, La , in the Mid
west, Raleigh, N C in the East
and Stanford, Cali* in the West
It will all culminate with the final
four in Norfolk, Va
Last year, Oregon's Ducks
went into the tournament as an
at-large team They played
Colorado in the first round at
Mac Court But then had to
travel to Los Angeles to tangle
with DSC They lost by three
points, but if they would have
won, they would have had to
play on the road in following
games
This year, the home court ad
vantage has ceased to exist
Oregon will play Missouri at
McArthur Court tommorow
night with the winner advancing
to Stanford for two more possi
ble playoff games
This year's tournament ap
pears to be farily balanced in all
four regions USC is the top
El win Helny
seeded team in the Mideast
regional, No 1 ranked Loui
siana Tech is the top seed in the
Midwest, No 2 Cheyney State is
tops in the East while Long
Beach State is the top seed in
the West regional
In the Western regional, it
looks like this: Long Beach
State is 22-5 on the year, with
Maryland. 22-6 the second
seed The Ducks, 21-4 are the
third seed, Drake 26-6, is
fourth. Ohio State, 19-6 is the
fifth seed, Stanford. 19-7 is
seventh and Howard, 14-10 is
the eighth seeded team in the
region
The four teams to win their
games will move on to the
second and third rounds at
Stanford University on March 19
and 21.
The Ducks have already
played two of the teams in their
region, Ohio State and Drake
Oregon handled Ohio State
68-60 in the finals of the Giusti
Tournament in December and
beat Drake 64-56 in January
Heiny indicates that this
year's tournament is balanced
“In the Mideast, I think USC
should win, but there are others
who can challenge them,”
Heiny said
”1 would think Louisiana
Tech, with its home court ad
vantage in the regionals, would
win the Midwest clearly, but
Georgia and Arizona State are
tough.
"Old Dominion should win the
East regional but Cheyney
State, ranked No 2 in the na
tion, is very good.
In our bracket, it is pretty
much up for grabs. Long Beach
State is very good as is
Maryland But so are we. A
number of teams could con
tend."
How about the Ducks
chances of advancing to the
final four?
"I think we have a good shot
at winning,” Heiny said. "It
really depends on how we play.
We will have to play very good to
win, but we can do it.”
First round play is slated to
run March 12-14, with the
semifinals and final at Norfolk,
Va on March 26 and 28.
