Songwriter, feminist Near
wants more togetherness
A call tor togetherness went out Wednesday
from singer/songwriter Holly Near, whose music
revolves around feminism and the fight against’
nuclear weapons
“Human beings, regardless of their political
alliance, need to seek solutions together," Near
said prior to her performance Wednesday
However, coalitions are "not a peaceful place
to be," Near said She was in Eugene to give a
Citizen Action for Lasting Security fundraising
concert
"You work with people who, on some other
issue, might like to kill you."
For example, Near recently visited Salt Lake
City, where Mormons are opposed to the MX
missile for different reasons than feminists are,
she said She doesn't disagree with that or a
similar situation in which her hunter friend wants
a nuclear plant closed because radiation is killing
his prey, she said
"I'm learning more tolerance ''
Effectiveness in social action is often in
creased by merely imagining success. Near said
"We re bombarded every day by things telling us
we re ineffective We need to find real creative
ways to empower each other.”
People feel hopeless and helpless because
“they forget the achievements of the progressives
of the world,” Near said
Achievements by women are changing the
personality of feminism, Near says Although the
success of feminism so far must be appreciated,
Near said she was "not afraid to criticize varied
parts of our movement because that's how we
learn "
Feminists have some hard thinking ahead.
Near said What does it mean to have a
women's" conference? What kind of identifica
tion do you require at the door? The women
who ve joined the feminist movement have varied
motivations. Near said, adding that she became a
feminist because of her "anti-imperialism”
stance
"I've never felt that women’s lib means
becoming president of a multi-national corpora
tion and wiping out Chile ”
