Track
—Continued from Page 8A
Forbes will lead the Ducks in
the 5,000 and 10,000, and Irene
Griffith — if she stays healthy —
and transfer Sandy Dickerson —
the national community college
cross country champion from
Lane Community College, will
both contribute in those two
events
In the throwing events, junior
Sally Harmon, who won the na
tional javelin title last spring,
and Florida State transfer Lynda
Hughes, who is ranked third in
the nation in the javelin, should
give the Ducks the best group of
javelin throwers in the country
The discus competition will
be in good hands with Karen
McDonald and Ouenna Beasley
ranked ninth and 18th in the
nation, respectively
In the shot put, Beasley is the
one to look for Others Heinon
en can look to for additional
points in the throws are Andrea
Heilman and Melanie Morrison
in the shot and discus, and Ka
ren Martin in the javelin
In the sprints, hurdles and
jumps, junior Lexie Miller will
lead the way Miller is the school
record holder in both the 100
and 400-meter hurdles with
times of 13 67 and 57 82, re
spectively, along with a record
leap of 19-9Vi in the long jump.
“I think we ll do really well
Everybody is working harder
than they have in the past cou
ple of years," Miller says "Per
sonally, I feel good and hope to
do well I know that I didn't con
tribute at nationals last year,
and want to (contribute) this
year."
In the hurdles, Miller will be
joined by senior Kris Costello,
sophomore Lisa Nicholson,
freshmen Mary Mitchoff and
Robin Pate Pate was a redshirt
last year
The sprints could be the one
weak spot for the Ducks this
year. Managing without a
sprinter most of last year due to
an injury to Batiste, the Ducks
might have to do so again in
1982 New Zealand Olympian,
Sue Jowett had turned in im
pressive times of 11.31 in the
100 meters and 23.00 in the 200,
but injuries have prevented her
from performing at top form for
the past few years.
In addition to Jowett, the
Ducks will look to 200 and
400-meter runners, Lena Fritz
son, Rhonda Massey, Grace
Bakari, plus hurdlers Miller and
Costello for support in the
sprints.
The 1600-meter relay team
will be in fine form with Fritzson,
Massey and Warren returning
along with Bakari, who an
chored last year’s third place
finish in the AIAW
Mitchoff and Jeanne Bor
chardt, along with Miller should
help score points for the Ducks
in the long jump.
Borchardt will also compete
in the high jump in addition to
Kari Easton, Joni Martin and
Julie Fitzgerald
Borchardt is the only Duck
with a mark in the heptathlon
with 4,672 points. But she could
be joined by Miller who has a
pentathlon best of 3,700 points.
Who are the teams to beat in
the Ducks' battle for their
second national championship
in three years?
“No one can touch us in the
Northwest and everybody
knows it,” Heinonen says.
