Military candidate
leads in Guatemala
GUATEMALA CITY
Gen Angel Anibal Guevara,
the military-backed candidate in
Guatemala’s presidential
election, maintained a firm vote
lead Monday, but his three
civilian rivals claimed fraud and
said they would challenge the
* results
All four candidates are right of
e center politically, and leftists
boycotted Sunday s balloting
c Guevara, former defense
minister in the military-dominat
ed government, was getting 37
percent of the votes, but it ap
peared he would not obtain the
absolute majority required for
election
The outgoing Congress will
name the president from the top
two vote-getters if no candidate
captures 51 percent of the vote,
and Guevara, with the largest
number of votes, was con
sidered the likely victor in legis
lative balloting for a four-year
term
With 383,365 votes counted,
Guevara had 143,440 votes, or
37 percent Second with
105,410 votes, or 27 percent,
was Mario Sandoval Alarcon of
the far-right National Liberation
Movement Alejandro Maldon
ado Aguirre, a Christian
Democrat and the most moder

Propellants loaded
aboard Columbia
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.
Launch pad crews completed
minor tasks Monday following a
trouble-free loading of volatile
propellants aboard the space
shuttle Columbia
"We are looking now to
preliminary preparations for
beginning of the launch count
down Thursday, March 18,"
said spokesman Dick Young at
Kennedy Space Center
The five-day countdown leads
into the March 22 liftoff for
Columbia's third flight, a seven
day mission designed primarily
to test temperature extremes on
the reusable spacecraft and its
cargo
The fill-up of hydrazine and
nitrogen tetroxide fuels into the
spacecraft's maneuvering and
steering systems was the last
major hurdle to be overcome
before technicians begin gear

Saudi Arabia cuts
oil production
NEW YORK
Saudi Arabia's decision to cut
its daily oil production by 1 mil
lion barrels will not halt the de
cline in world oil prices unless
other OPEC members also
agree to decrease production,
analysts said Monday
Saudi Arabia, which
produces more than 40 percent
of OPEC's oil, announced over
the weekend that it had cut
production to 7 5 million barrels
in March
At the same time, the Organ
ization of Petroleum Exporting
Countries said it would hold an
emergency meeting March 19 in
Vienna to discuss weakening oil
prices
"This in itself will not make a
difference,' said J G Stabback,
an energy specialist at the Royal
Bank of Canada in Calgary, Al
berta, of the Saudi move
Stabback and other analysts
said they expect the Saudis to
press tor — and receive — con
cessions from other OPEC
members to limit their produc
tion
A cut of 1 million barrels a day
in Saudi Arabia's output will
have little effect on the huge
oversupply of oil on world mar
kets, analysts said because the
Saudis production already was
falling below the official ceiling
of 8 5 million barrels by at ieast
500,000 barrels a day
