Goodbye Bev, hello NCAA
By Mike Riplinger
Of Of Emoratd
Oregon athletic director Rick
Bay said it best.
“There is never going to be
another 24 and there's never
going to be another Bev Smith "
Smith ended her regular sea
son career Saturday night with
her usual style as she led the
Oregon women's basketball
team over the University of
Montana 70-52
Smith was honored with "Bev
Smith Night” as her number was
retired after the game, and her
family and friends introduced as
a sort of "This is your life, Bev
Smith " Typical of the athletic
Smith family, her father couldn’t
be there because at age 60, he
was in Salmon Arm, Canada
playing in an old-timers hockey
game
As with any great act. Smith
will be called back for an encore
next Saturday when the Ducks
host the University of Missouri in
the first round of the NCAA
playoffs
"We hate to lose her.” under
stated her coach Elwin Heiny
“She has done so much for
Oregon, on and off the court
Anything you say positive about
Bev is true She is just a super
person "
“She was very good tonight,"
said Heiny of Smith's 20 point,
13 rebound and 8 assist perfor
mance "Or I should say normal,
or the same as always It’s very
common that when the game
gets close. Bev shines She
passes, shoots, rebounds
whatever it takes to win."
Smith s last regular season
game was characteristic of her
entire career When the Ducks
were struggling at the beginning
of the game. Smith helped build
an early lead and the Ducks
went into half-time up 41-29
Smith then let the rest of the
Ducks take over, accumulating
assists but not shooting But,
when Oregon got into trouble.
Smith came alive The Grizzlies,
who were down at one point,
50-32. clawed their way back to
only a 10 point deficit, and
seemed to be on the verge of
getting back into the game
Then Smith took over She hit
a long jumper, dished off to Ali
son Lang for two inside, hit two
more jumpers, and then stole
the ball and hit a layin — her last
score of the night, and Montan
a's last chance
Bev Smith saved a hug for her mother during ceremonies honoring
her years in a Duck uniform Saturday night
Oregon, which blew out Mon
tana State 82-53 Friday night,
brought their record up to 21-4
The Ducks who are ranked ninth
nationally, seemed to have
lucked out in the draw for the

NCAA tournament They are
seeded third in the Western
region, and will go to Stanford if
they can make it past their first
round game with Missouri Long
Beach State is seeded first and
USC. who demolished Oregon
86-64 was switched to the Mid
west regional where they are
seeded number one
"I won't miss playing USC in
our region," laughed Heiny It
will still be a tough region, but
with USC gone it makes it a little
easier "
With Oregon playing Missouri
next Saturday night. Eugene will
get its last chance of seeing
Smith in the green and gold
"In this community, those
who have gotten to know Bev
are the lucky ones,' said Heiny
“From the older people, to the
little kids who ask her to go their
games and to sit with them dur
ing the men's games They are
the ones who are lucky enough
to have experienced meeting
Bev
"She is so amazing She has
probably gone to over 50 little
kids games Whether she was
sick or busy with other things,
she always made time for
others
"We couldn't ask for a better
ambassador, on or off the court
She never says anything to the
team, but they put out because
they have so much respect for
her If she is going to be on the
court, you better believe the rest
of the team is going to work their
tails off
"It is going to be tough to lose
her She should have four more
years "
That's a wish that all of us
dream for
