    Medler, Ducks gain
fencing championship
Portland — The Oregon fencing team came away with
almost all the honors Saturday, as the Ducks won the overall
competition of the Northwest intercollegiate Fencing Cham
pionships at Lewis and Clark College.
Out of eight schools competing in the championships.
Oregon emerged as the No 1 school, losing only die men s
team foil — that by just two points
The Ducks’ Mike Medler came away with die individual
championship and the team of Medler. Frank Hsieh and Fumi
Ueda came in second in the men's team foil.
Katie Mickey finished first and Tara Harper second in the
women s individual foil, and the women s team of Hickey Anne
Marie Tiazza. Alison Woodfieid and Linsay Organ took the
women’s team championship
Helm to swim at nationals
Seattle — Oregon junior Tina Helm broke two
meet and school records over the weekend at
the Northwest College Women's Sports Associa
tion swimming championships on her way to
qualifying for the AlAW nationals in the 100- and
200-yard backstroke
Oregon scored 445 points and could only
muster sixth-place, however, while the host
school, the University of Washington, captured
their ninth straight title with 1,435 points
Helm's 59.76 time in the 100-yards
backstroke her old NCWSA record of 1 00.11 she
set in 1979, and her 2:05 60 in the 200-yard
backstroke also broke her 1979 record of 2:06 13
Helm also took first in the 50-yard backstroke
in a time of 28 44 Other firsts include Tama
Cuddeback's 1:08.16 in the 100-yard breastroke
and 2:12 39 in the 200-yard individual medley, and
Susie Borchardt's 26 75 in the 50-yard butterfly
