Bruins ruin, Troy toys with Ducks
Ducks conclude year
versus Arizona clubs
By Jeff Dickerson
Of tfw Emotwld
UCLA guard ‘ Rocket" Rod Foster
scored 35 points — 13 from the foul line — as
the Bruins handed the Oregon basketball
team its second loss in 17 hours and its 16th
loss in 25 games, running past the Ducks
88-66 in the final minutes Saturday after
noon
Oregon tried its hardest to stay in the
game — exhibiting an inspired, if not always
coordinated defensive effort — but was
never able to whittle the lead down further
than five points in the second half
Jerome Williams slammed a rebound
home with 6:20 remaining in the game to
bring the Ducks within five, 66-61, but the
Oregon junior grasped the rim and was
charged with a technical foul Foster made
the charity toss. UCLA went into a spread
offense that utilized Foster's speed, and
scored 22 of the game's last 27 points
The loss was the second in as many
nights for the Ducks, who bowed to USC
Friday night 80-68
Oregon fans, too, had an active part in
both contests When the Ducks were lead
ing or rallying, the scoreboard was shaking
— Mac Court was rocking But in the end,
frustrated Duck supporters could only sing
"bye, bye Haney" or hold up placards
Rod Foster
calling for the Oregon coach to be fired.
Some Oregon supporters recently have
called for Haney’s dismissal because his
team has failed to come up with a winning
year in his four years as coach.
There wasn't much the Duck mentor
could have done to stop the hot shooting of
Foster on Saturday though
The junior guard started as a freshman
on the 1980 NCAA runner-up team, but has
received less playing time this year because
of outstanding play of Michael Holton and
Ralph Jackson. Foster got the starting nod
Saturday, played 32 minutes and scored 35
points.
Oregon jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks
to two long-range jumpers by Gary
Gatewood But three buckets by all-Amer
ican candidate Mike Sanders, a technical
foul on the Oregon bench (when Haney
walked onto the court during play to protest
an official's non-call) and a score by Kenny
fields launched the Bruins into a 10-4 lead
they never relinquished
Oregon drew to within two, 12-10, and
stayed close through the middle of the first
half. But a 14-8 spurt by UCLA, capped off
by a tip in by freshman center Stuart Gray
with eight seconds left, put the Bruins up
47-35 at the half
Oregon scored the first three points of
the second half, but UCLA quickly rebuilt
their lead, which hovered around 15 points
for the first five minutes of the half. The
Ducks whittled the lead down on several
occasions in the second half, only to have
UCLA again take control.
Oregon made one last attempt at
removing the Bruins from the lead. Scores
by senior captain John Greig, David Brant
ley and Williams got the Ducks close just
before UCLA outscored Oregon 22-5 to
close out the game.
Oregon shot a credible 54 percent from
the field (64 percent in the first half), but it
wasn't nearly enough to combat UCLA's 37
of 58 from the field and 14 of 19 from the
free-throw line
