Last stand for Duck men
USC, UCLA round out
Oregon home schedule
By Jeff Dickerson
Ol tff Emoraid
Like an acting troupe walking onto a stage for
a play that has failed miserably at the box office
and in the columns of critics, Jim Haney and his
beleagured basketball squad make one last
homestand this weekend.
And if the Ducks haven’t already had their
share of problems, their opponents for this week
end's games, USC and UCLA, have proven to be
particularly tough on the Webfoots, especially in
McArthur Court
In Haney s tour years as coach of the Ducks,
Oregon is 2-6 in Mac Court against the Southern
California schools
Compounding Oregon's woes is the Pac-10
schedule, which allowed them two days to prac
tice before their fin^l home weekend begins and
only 15 hours between the two games
“We just got back from Washington State
Tuesday (following a 76-69 loss to the Cougars),"
Haney says, "and that isn't a lot of time to prepare
to play anybody " The Ducks face the Trojans at
7:35 p.m. Friday and must bounce back to take on
UCLA in a 1 p.m. contest Saturday, which will be
televised on the West Coast
Fortunately for Oregon, both opponents are
similar in styles of play. Haney said
Both are strong inside with more than
adequate rebounders, he said. Both play man-to
man defense and utilize their offensive and
defensive quickness to pressure their opponents
at both ends of the court The Ducks will have to
be at the top of their game mentally and physically
if they are to stand a chance against either of the
two schools, he says
"We are going to have to show more poise
against the press.' Haney says,' but we also have
We’ve always got a reason to have a good time.
