Oregon another BH1 Nugent and the rest of the Ducks begin detente of their Pec-10 title today.
Wrestlers begin Pac-10s
By Paul Danzar

A season full of hard work and
two grueling weeks of
twice-a-day workouts will all be
behind Oregon's wrestlers
when they hit the mat at Stan
ford Sunday for the 1982 Pac-10
wrestling championships
For the first time in recent
memory, the Ducks will pack a
healthy starting lineup into the
van heading south
The only exception may be
senior 150-pounder Barry
Boyles, who is suffering pain in
his lower back But as Duck
coach Ron Finley noted, this is
the Pac-10 tournament, and he
will wrestle
Oregon enters this year's
tournament in the role of
defending champion Finley
says his troops will have to claim
at least five individual titles if
they want to hang on to that role
for another year
Finley expects the toughest
competition to come from rival
Oregon State and Arizona
State, teams which accounted
for two of the Ducks’ four dual
meet losses this season The
Sun Devils clobbered the Ducks
down south, while the Beavers
forced the Ducks to settle for a
14-win season, avenging an
earlier loss to the Ducks with a
28-11 victory at McArthur Court
two weeks ago
Since that loss to the Beavers,
the Duck grapplers have been
working out twice a day under
Finley's critical eye in prepara
tion for the tourney

“Dual meets don't mean
much. It's the tournaments that
matter," Finley said after the
loss to OSU Now he thinks his
squad is ready to show what it
can do.
“We've had two weeks of
good, hard practice and I think
we will be ready to get rolling on
Sunday," Finley said "I feel
good about our chances going
into the tournament.”
A big reason for that good
feeling is the return of defend
ing Pac-10 champions Mike Erb
and Bill Nugent to the Ducks
along with 190-pound soph
omore standout Lance Ho
chanadel
Erb missed much of the
regular season with an elbow
injury before returning to action
against the Beavers Nugent
missed the OSU meet with a leg
injury after returning from a
month in Russia, while Hochan
adel missed the Ducks' last six
outings with a back injury.
Finley listed Nugent, who took
the title last year at 142, Ho
chanadel and Cliff Porter at 134
and heavyweight Dan Cook as
four Ducks who “definitely have
a good chance at first (place).”
The coach said that four other
wrestlers could finish on top,
including Erb, who took first at
118 last year. Other possible
winners are Boyles at 150, Rick
O’Shea at 158, and Keith Beu
tler, who beat out Paul Sheriff at
167.
