ran into some quality competition as they
finished sixth sn the eight-team Shanico Cup
Invitational in Corvallis Friday, scoring a total
of 136,20
The Ducks were in a held that included
2nd-ranked Oregon State, 10th-ranked Ok
lahoma State. I2th-ranked BYU, I3th-ranked
USC and 15th -ranked Ohio State OSU won the
meet with a score of 144 50, followed by USC's
142 30
Oregon was led by Sara Gustafson, who
made the finals in the vault with a 9 1 score and
on the floor with an 8 8 mark Holly Holmes,
whose 8 95 m the vault earned her a spot in the
finals, also turned in a fine performance for the
Ducks
In addition, Julie Tennenhouse missed the
vault finals by only 05 points at 8,9 and Maur
een Nolan suffered the same fate, missing the
finals on me uneven bars by the same margin
at 8 §
A high note for the Ducks was their com
bined team total of 3570 in me vault, second
highest in the meet behind Washington But
the sixth-place overall finish all but killed
Oregon's hopes for a berm at nationals, and
Krichko acknowledged as much

Smith passes mark,
Oregon wins pair
All-everything Bev Smith proved herself again, as she over
came the flu to break the 2000-point barrier this weekend in
Northwest Women's Basketball League action
Oregon, ranked 10th nationally, trounced the University of
Washington 79-58 Friday and Eastern Washington 71-60 on
Saturday to bring its record up to 18-4 on the season
Oregon will travel tonight to Pullman to take on Washington
State, completing the Washington road swing
Smith overcame the flu, which threatened to sideline her for the
weekend, to score 15 points, 11 assists and 14 rebounds against
Washington, and added 23 points and 12 rebounds against EWU.
Smith s accomplishment overshadowed excellent perfor
mances by Alison Lang, who tallied 58 points and 23 rebounds for
the weekend Lang, who was named player of the Week in the
NWBL last week, will be fighting Smith for the honor again as she
scored 27 points and 12 rebounds against Washington, and added
31 more points with 11 rebounds against EWU
Mary Ann Stoican, who is from Gig Harbor, celebrated her
return to the Seattle area by adding 10 points and six rebounds
against Washington
Smith, the leading scorer for the women, needs only 81 more
points to be the all-time scorer for anyone in an Oregon uniform
Former Oregon all-American Ron Lee holds the record of 2085
points which Smith threatens to beat With 2,004 points already, five
regular season gam^s left and probable NCAA tournament play,
she looks to be in a good position to set the new record She and
Oregon will travel tonight to Pullman to take on Washington State
The Cougars are 14-11 on the season will be led by Wade Trophy
finalist, Jeanne Eggart, who is averaging 17.1 points a game
The Ducks will return to Mac Court Saturday for a game with the
Korean National team

Johnson scored 16 of his
game-high 27 points in the
fourth quarter Sunday night as
the Atlanta Hawks came from
far behind to down the Portland
Trail Blazers 109-97 in a Na
tional Basketball Association
game
The Hawks, who won their
fourth straight game on the
road, trailed 64-47 at halftime,
but held the Blazers to just 33
points in the second half as
Johnson and John Drew came
alive on offense.
The Blazers, 28-24, dropped
their fourth straight and their
third in a row at home.
Portland, shooting 63.6 per
cent in the first half, managed
only 14 field goals in 40 attempts
in the final half for 35 percent
The Blazers were out
rebounded 43-36
Portland was led by Kelvin
Ransey’s 18 points. Billy Ray
Bates and Mychal Thompson
added 15 points apiece
Thompson also grabbed 12
rebounds
