Conference
For over half a year the ASUO
has been hard at work planning
and organizing the Northwest
National Security Conference
which will take place on campus
Feb 25-27
At a time when the govern
ment is proposing to allocate to
the Defense Dept, a record
breaking peacetime budget the
conference will bring together
nationally known people, who
are supportive as well as critical
of Administration policies, some
of whom have not only come
and give their opinions but have
to answer questions from the
audience as well
This is a unique opportunity
for us To paraphrase a WWI
general, national security is too
important to be left to the ex
perts We re the ones who sup
ply the money and the bodies for
the policies these people for
mulate I feel it is obligatory we
show up and listen to the con
ference speakers and in turn
ask them the cold hard ques
tions they so rarely receive
I know there are hundreds of
thousands of veterans across
the country in VA hospitals and
Vet Centers across the country
who wish that people had asked
similar questions of the national
security experts twenty years
ago
We may never have a chance
like this again Let’s not blow it

Incompetent
I can't stand it any longer' I
have to speak my peace about
Jim Haney! I think he is one of
the most incompetent, ir
responsible coaches in the
league, or in the nation for that
matter I am speaking of the
incident with Barry Walker.
Haney has enough trouble
keeping players on the team, to
start throwing them off! Barry
Walker is a money ball player
and had sparked the Ducks
more than once this year Most
of all he is certainly entitled to
voice his opinion. Haney's deci
sion not to play Walker in his last
game against OSU was a slap in
the face If I were Walker I’d
slap Haney in the face! Haney, if
you can't stand the heat in the
kitchen, get out.

Homosexuality
The Emerald's review of
"Making Love" is infuriating
Where does Matt Meyer get off
imposing his beliefs on homo
sexuality when he should be
reviewing whether the movie
technically works of not? His
insinuation that homosexuality
is indeed a disease that we
should all fear and that homo
sexuals are socially irresponsi
ble is ridiculous
Get a grip on your latent fears
and in the future stick to objec
tive reporting We want to know
if the acting, writing and direc
tion are worthwhile, not your
personal bias on the subject
matter
How much did Jerry Falwell
pay you to write this, anyway?

Regrets
The Emerald regrets the mis
information conveyed in
Monday's editorial concerning
the IFC and intramural funding
The IFC is required to put cer
tain funding matters before the
students
The Emerald further regrets
any bad light it may have cast on
the IFC
Clues
It is too bad that your
reviewer, Marian Green, didn't
understand Tennessee Wil
liams’ "The Glass Menagerie,"
for the ORT's production is the
best (of three) I’ve seen The
trouble is, one has to un
derstand the play before one
can judge the characteriza
tions Williams gives plenty of
$18,000 THIS YEAR?
After graduation, and if you qualify the U S. Air
Force, we will pay you over $18,000 the first year
and over $30,000 after the fourth year
We need NAVIGATORS to use our highly sophis
ticated electronic equipment to guide our aircraft
to their destinations, all over the world. This is an
executive flying position unequaled in the flying
world
You may qualify for this exciting opportunity if
you're a U S citizen in good health, up to 27 years
old and a college senior or graduate

A great way of life
clues, the biggest right at the
beginning: the play's subject is
memory And as memory sof
tens the edges and intensities of
all things remembered, so the
dream-like atmosphere of
ORT's production seems just
right. So does Jacquie
McClure's Amanda. The Wing
field family is imprisoned in a
past, Amanda's remembered
past Green wants Amanda
"more hard-bitten." Well, to a
southern lady of Amanda’s
quality, it is no virtue to be
hard-bitten Perhaps Green
should stick to the soaps. Or
read Faulkner.
