"Making love" takes the easy way out
‘Making Love'
Michael Ontkean, Kate Jackson
Valley River Twin
Michael Ontkean is Zack Elliott, a young doctor
with a lovely wife, a new house, an old Austin-Healey
and a problem. After eight years of marriage, he
discovers that he's attracted to other men
Kate Jackson (ex-Charlie's Angel) is Claire, his
wife She's a network exec who's out to bring intelligent
programming to American television. She senses that
something's happening to her storybook marriage, and
confronts Zack, confident that "whatever it is, we can
handle it.”
"What it is” is another man, who Zack decides he
must be with at the cost of all else Harry Hamlin plays
Bart, a gay writer who likes looking at his body and
hates lasting relationships.
Jackson and Ontkean are excellent They give their
parts life, and make the audience share in the pain of
their situation. In the confrontation scenes, Jackson
brings out a strength in her character at the same time
she is denying the situation and grasping for solutions
The direction is also good. Arthur (“Silver Streak,”
'Love Story") Hiller ties everything together nicely into
a tight, well-produced package that sails along well,
even in pretty tricky spots, such as when Zack and Bart
kiss (thankfully the most explicit the film gets)
After that, however, it gets into rough waters It
brings up a powerful topic, then ignores a crucial
aspect of it
Homosexuality is more than a social issue; it's a
moral one as well. Screenwriter Barry Sandler seems to
have forgotten this None of the characters wonders
whether there are any moral implications to his actions
Screenwriter Barry Sandler seems to
have forgotten homosexuality is
more than a social issue.
Right and wrong are reduced to the mentality of one of
Bart's lines: “Life is too short to play games If it feels
good, do it."
I find it hard to believe that our society's morals
have crumbled so far that someone considering homo
sexuality wouldn’t even stop to question the implica
tions of his actions further than wondering if the guy he
went to bed with would still be there in the morning
Zack treats the decision of his sexuality with less moral
thought than most of use when deciding which
candidate to vote for
To make matters worse, Sandler sees Zack’s
"homosexual urges" as part of a mysterious, uncon
trollable disease that strikes without notice, forcing him
to change his entire life Homosexuality becomes an
unbeatable illness, as is shown in one scene when Bart
says to Zack, "Physician, heal thyself " The audience
leaves the theater with the terrible fear, "It might
happen to me!"
“Making Love" takes the easy way out and doesn't
bother with morality, God, personal choice, or tricky
stuff like that Instead, it spends its time telling us that
"homosexuals are people, too" and that
"homosexuality is a valid way of life." Because it only
shows one side of the issue, it comes off as a slickly
produced advertisement for the gay movement, but
doesn’t really get to the heart of the issue
