The director of the U S Bu
reau of Land Management
spoke at the Lane County
Republican Party's annual Lin
coln Day Dinner Friday — and
was more interested in compar
ing Pres Ronald Reagan to
Pres Abraham Lincoln than
discussing timber contracts and
other environmental issues
Refusing to answer questions
about those topics, Robert Bur
ford issued only one short sta
tement defending policies ini
tiated by him and his boss —
Secretary of Interior James
Watt.
"Both of us are interested in
the environment Both of us
grew up on the ranch and did
not come to office to destroy the
environment,” Burford told
republicans
Burford, a rancher for 30
years and Colorado state legis
lator for six years before being
appointed head of the BLM in
May, talked about "federalism,"
disagreements on the proposed
1983 federal budget, and pre
sidential leadership
Quoting Lincoln on the rights
of the individual, community
and state over those of the
federal government. Burford
said the GOP is moving back
towards "respect for” and
emphasis on government" by
the lower levels of government

He said he had spoken to a
group of county commissioners
earlier in the day, and that they
are the basis of the type of
government under which "the
rest of us strive to achieve
things."
Burford, formerly speaker of
the Colorado House of Repre
sentatives, said that state’s
legislature avoided many of the
economic problems Oregon
faces by refusing to institute
new taxes five years ago that
would have created a tax credit
system.
"We will get a budget
through We will come closer to
reducing the deficit this time
than last time,” he said about
disagreements among mem
bers of Congress on the
proposed 1983 federal budget
One reason Reagan will
prevail is because he is consis
tent in his ideas and statements,
Burford said
“Some of us do believe this
may be the one last chance to
change the course of govern
ment,” he said, explaining that
many businessmen have made
earnings and other sacrifices to
join the Reagan administration
“Let’s give them a little
chance, a little longer, because
it will take a little while to slow
inflation down, to balance the
budget, to get interest rates
back where they belong ”
