Wizards whiz to bowl win
By Diane Wlnocur

In the tine art of creative guessing, delay
tactics, and knowing when to interrupt, the
Wizards — a four-man team from Tingle dormitory
— proved Wednesday night that no one guesses,
delays or interrupts better
The name of this game is College Bowl The
object to respond with correct answers before
the other team can do the same The prize was
$75 and a tee-shirt
Billed as the "varsity sport of the mind” by its
Time/Life sponsors, the University Housing
Department brings this trivia/game show to cam
pus each year as the intellectual entry among its
intramural sports offerings, says organizer Sally
Smith, director of the University Inn
Elimination rounds began last month among
50 teams Each of the five complexes determined
a dorm-wide and then complex-wide champ to
enter in this week s final intradorm show down
It was the Wizards who beat everyone else to
the buzzer
During each question, the noise from the
small audience hushed as each contestant
strained for a response Some elbowed their
neighbors knowingly, while others shook their
heads in bewilderment at the impossiblity of the
questions
The questions were donated from professors
all over campus. Smith says, as well as from a
purchased Time/Life packet Topics and degree
of difficulty were widely varied Questions ranged
from sports and television trivia to physics and
literature
"To win you should have a good scientist, a
liberal arts major, someone in communication,
and in business — a broad general background,"
Smith says
Preparation before the big match took var
ious forms among the teams Chris Warner of
Caswell, whose team lost to Tingle in the last
round before the semifinals, says he played
College Bowl in high school, and is a frequent
reader of trivia books But the Wizards were
briefed in delaying tactics, according to Ruane,
such as speaking a response as slowly as possi
ble to stretch out thinking time
Davis remembers watching the old College
Bowl game show on television, on which the
current version is based
I used to watch it all the time," he says "I
couldn't answer any of those crazy questions, like
Who was born in 1885 and went on to invent
cotton?' "
