Pacific 10 schools show off their new recruits
Washington coach Don James was
speaking at a news conference in Seattle
Wednesday about the big one that got away —
6-8, 280 lineman Jim FitzPatrick who joined up
with Southern California.
"I had a feeling we weren't going to get
him," said James
A reporter spoke up: "I hear O J. wined and
dined him for 'SC "
"I heard they resurrected John Wayne for
him too," retorted James
Letter of intent day is always a day of
mixed feelings for coaches in the Pacific 10
Conference — happiness and relief when a
Kevin Willhite puts his name on the dotted line,
disappointment when a Jim FitzPatrick goes
somewhere else
Each member of the conference could
point to at least one top recruit they're proud to
show off
James was pleased with the 16 players
who signed letters of intent to join the Huskies
Several held excellent credentials, including
Tim Peoples, a wide receiver-defensive back
from San Jose, Calif Peoples was all-state,
all-Northern California and most valuable
player in his league, catching 33 passes for 543
yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior
In Corvallis, the Oregon State Beavers
were rejoicing with the news that Andre Todd,
the much-recruited lineman from Pittsburgh,
Calif. had opted to join the Orange Forces
Two other Californians signed as future
wide receivers for the Beavers They are Rex
Brown of Oceanview High School in Hunting
ton Beach and transfer Danny Robinzine of
San Bernardino Valley Community College
The 5-10, 168-pound Brown has times of 10 5
for 100 meters and 21 4 for 200 meters The
6-0, 168-pound Robinzine has times of 10 4
and 21 4 in the sprints
The Washington State Cougars signed 14

members of Richland High School s state
championship team Richland quarterback

MILL CITY, On. (AP) - The
local school board is scheduled
to meet tonight about a high
school basketball practice
where the players were pe
nalized for missing free throws
by having to remove articles of
clothing.
Santiam High School Coach
Morris Snider and Doug O’Neal,
an assistant coach, said the
strip penalty was used on varsity
and junior varsity players during
a Jan. 27 practice that they
called a one-time event done to
liven up the mid-season blahs
and to improve the team’s free
throw percentage
O'Neal said by the end of
practice, three varsity players
had lost their shorts and two of
his junior varsity players were
wearing only shoes and socks
The coaches said the practice
was conducted in private. Three
girls from the school’s dance
and drill team, however, entered
the gym during the drill, but
Snider said he asked them to
leave before they had a chance
to see the boys.
“I’m not sure who's com
plaining about what," said O B.
Sanders, school principal.
“This is one of those situa
tions that gets out of proportion
We all feel very embarassed
about it. I’ve been assured that it
won’t happen again."
