Crater Lake park offers summer jobs
By Monica Harrington
OtUrn Emarmld
Crater Lake National Park is one of the few places
in the United States where cross-country skiers in
mid-June are followed less than a month later by
runners sweating under the summer heat
It is also one of the few places in Oregon recruiting
students for summer employment.
Crater Lake, like the rest of the National Parks
network, is operated by two different organizations The
best known of the two is the National Park Service staff,
which consists of the park's interpretive staff, patrol
rangers, administration, and general maintenance
crew
But it's the other organization — the park’s con
cession — that sends recruiters to college campuses
throughout Oregon and Washington These recruiters
screen applicants for jobs in areas such as food service,
housekeeping, and retail clerking
Pat Louquet, office manager for the Crater Lake
concession, says 120 students will be offered jobs for
the 1982 season, which runs June 15-Sept 9
Living and working amid the beauty of Oregon's
only national park may sound like the perfect job, but
former employees don’t always back that up While
there are dozens of spectacular spots in the park to hike
to, seasonal employees find there's not adequate time
to explore them Almost all concession employees work
six days a week, a schedule that doesn't leave much
time for exploring
Pam Pine, a University student who has worked at
Crater Lake for three seasons, said she "had a great
Isolation is hard to handle...
time the first two seasons The third would have been
wonderful too, if it weren’t for management " Since
employees all live and work together in close contact
with their bosses, everything, both on and off the job, is
subject to evaluation, she said, and the management is
careful to emphasize that a replacement is but a phone
call away
The summer staff at Crater Lake operates like a
mini-community, say former employees The nearest
city. Klamath Falls, is more than an hour’s drive away.
which forces the park employees to look to each other
and their environment for entertainment
Crater Lake's concessionaire, Canteen Company
of Oregon, tries to help out by offering employee
dances, movies, and a rec room But for many workers,
isolation and homesickness takes its toll, and there’s
usually a heavy turnover after the first two weeks
Wages throughout all the national parks are low,
but some workers, most notably the waiters and wait
resses, make out very well One University student who
waited tables in the lodge dining room last summer
made about $3,500 in tips and wages The pay scale for
other employees, however, hovers around the minimum
wage
The concession also deducts about $200 per
month for room and board
Concession workers live in the employee dormi
tory Employees share rooms to store their belongings
with 8-10 others, and bunk in sex-segregated sleeping
porches at either end of the building
A Crater Lake National Park recruiter will be at the
job placement office Febuary 10, 11, 24 and 25
Students interested in an interview should make an
appointment at the placement office
