Residents applaud food, RAs
Noise, bicycle security, and
food quality are the main areas
of concern among dormitory
residents, according to results
of a November survey released
Monday at a Residence Hall
Governance Committee meet
ing
The 197 students surveyed
also praised custodial services.
resident assistants, food t
tity, and expressed satisfaction
with roommates
The number of students ob
jecting to dormitory noise levels
is particularly noteworthy
because such conditions hurt
the housing department's ability
to recruit and retain student
residents, said Marge Ramey,
assistant director of the depart
ment
Boredom caused by eating at
the same place every day may
have contributed to the low food
quality rating. Ramey said
Many of the students who re
sponded to the surveys includ
ed a request for a characteris
tics questionnaire, which would
match roommates by personal
habits and other character
istics, she said Such a form
is being worked on, Ramey
aid
Council members speculated
that returned surveys may not
be representative of all dorm
residents because only those
students particularly pleased or
displeased would return the
randomly distributed forms
Other survey results showed
that more than 80 percent of
students value recreational
facilities and generally believe
campus facilities to be good,
and almost 80 percent would
like to see more social and
educational functions in their
halls
Almost 60 percent of the
students surveyed indicated an
interest in faculty members din
ing, and possibly living, in the
residence halls
In other business, the Council
elected Doug Rappaport, a
University Inn resident, as its
new chairer. Rappaport re
placed Roy Elbie, a Carson Hall
resident who resigned last week
because of personal reasons"
and dissatisfaction with the
Council's changing role in dor
mitory government
The RHGC also voted to give
$300 and loan $2,500 to a cam
pus carnival being sponsored
by the Hamilton and Bean dor
mitories later this spring
