Argentina asked for troops
to stop El Salvador supplies
NEW YORK (AP) - Reagan
administration officials have
approached the government of
Argentina about having that
country infiltrate combat forces
into Nicaragua, ABC News
reports
Basing its report on an un
identified congressional
source, ABC reported Wednes
day that the purpose of the infil
tration would be to help choke
off supplies allegedly being sent
to rebels in El Salvador from
Cuba through Nicaragua If all
went well, the troops might
mount a counter-revolution
against Nicaragua's ruling left
ist junta. ABC said
The report said the combat
troops would wear no uniforms
but would be infiltrating as Latin
American freedom fighters and
would operate in guerrilla fa
shion
A spokesman at the Argentine
Embassy in Washington called
the report completely an in
vention State Department
spokesman Alan Romberg
refused comment, but added
that lack of a response should
not be read as an implicit con
firmation ”
At the White House spokes
man David Gergen refused
comment and then cautioned
reporters against reading a
confirmation or denial into his
no comment
Asked if the United States
would engage in overt or covert
action, or join with another na
tion to overthrow a government
now in place, Gergen replied
that policy statements” have
been made on the issue in the
past and that he would not try to
repeat them off the top of my
head '
Meanwhile, Capt Roberto
Sanchez, a Nicaraguan Army
spokesman, said Wednesday
the Sandimsta government had
"significant evidence" that
rebels inside Nicaragua have
received logistic support from
elements of the Argentine mili
tary
In an interview in Managua,
Nicaragua. Sanchez said rebels
were being advised by Argen
tinian officers. He did not, how
ever, present any evidence of
the Argentinian role
On Tuesday, Secretary of
State Alexander Haig said the
United States, in cooperation
with its Latin American allies,
would do whatever is neces
sary” to block a victory by
leftists in El Salvador
In Senate testimony, Haig
said the administration was
'considering a whole range of
options — political, economic
and security — in response to
Cuban intervention in this
hemisphere."
This week, the State
Department also stepped up its
verbal attack against leftist
Nicaragua, denouncing it as "a
base for the export of subver
sion and armed intervention
throughout Central America ”
The sources, however, said
the intervention of other coun
tries in the political turmoil of
Central America could draw in
other nations and end up
spreading the conflict through
out Latin America
One informed source said the
Argentinians have a military
training mission in El Salvador,
totalling about 50 men
However, El Salvador s ambas
sador to the United States, Er
nesto Rivas Gallont, denied the
presence of any Argentinian
military trainers
