Ducks need a sweep
High finish on the line
against Cardinals, Cal
By Donald Coulter
CM **• Enyrwtd
To say that this will be a must" weekend for
the Oregon men s basketball team may be an
exaggeration, but a pair of victories over Stanford
and California could be just the medicine the
Ducks need at this stage of the season
"If we re going to finish in the upper division
(of the Pac-10) we need to win this weekend."
Oregon coach Jim Haney says of the two Mac
Court contests
Any home game is vital These are two
teams we can beat '
And they are two teams the Ducks would
surely love to beat, after losing to both on the road
four weeks ago The Ducks dropped a 91-81
decision to Cal in Berkeley before losing the next
evening at Stanford. 97-88
"We ran into an unfortunate situation down
there. Oregon forward John Greig says of the
Ducks' trip to the Bay Area "We got caught up in
the officiating problems we had against Cal. and
then when things went wrong at Stanford, we
started thinking about what happened the night
before
"We got frustrated when we didn't get the call
we wanted and we lost our composure ”
Oregon (3-6 in the conference 8-10 overall)
was without the services of starting guard Fred
Cofield for both those games, a factor that has not
escaped California coach Duck Kutchen
"Oregon had to play without Cofield, whom I
consider one of the best guards in the Pac-10
when healthy." Kutchen says And it was a road
game for them So reverse the home court ad
vantage and figure on a healthy Cofield and draw
your own conclusions
The Bears were led by Mark McNamara s 27
points in that game McNamara leads the Pac-10
in scoring (22 4). rebounding (13 3) and is the
NCAA s field goal percentage leader (1692)
Another key in that win was the play of Cal's 5-9
guard Michael Chavez, who ripped the Ducks for
21 points, his season high Chavez is averaging
9 9 points a game
"McNamara is going to get his. but we have to
keep the others in line, says Greig Michael
Chavez is not a person who should be scoring
that much ."
Tonight's opponent. Stanford is paced by
sophomore center John Revelli Revelli is among
the conference leaders in scoring (16 9),

Jerome Williams and the Ducks hope to avenge
losses to Cal and Stanford with victories this
weekend.
rebounding (9 4) and field goal percentage ( 640)
But it was another surprise — reserve forward
Orlando Ward — who burned the Ducks at Stan
ford Ward came oft the bench to score 16 against
the Ducks in that game
The victory against Oregon has been the only
conference win for Stanford (1-8 6-12) which
comes into the contest with a seven-game losing
streak Cal (3-6, 9-9) has lost six of its last seven
since the Oregon win the lone victory coming
over Arizona last Saturday
DUCK NOTES - STARTING TIME FOR
BOTH TONIGHT S GAME VS Stanford and Sat
urday s game against California is 7 30 p m
Greig is the Ducks leading scorer with 15 8 points,
while Jerome Williams is second with 13 6 The
two forwards also one-two in team rebounding
stats Williams is averaging 8 1 and Greig 7 4
