Art ed dept, ranks high in U.S. poll
By Mark Pynes
Of ttta Emarakt
A small department by most
measures, the University's art
education doctoral program
ranks among the leaders in the
field of art education
Although the last national poll
of art education doctoral pro
grams was taken more than
three years ago, June McFee,
head of the art education
department, says the poll that
ranked the University’s depart
ment second, is still accurate
The University has the only art
education doctoral program —
at a public school — on the West
Coast Stanford University,
which is a private school,
ranked number one in the poll.
The doctoral program, which
offers doctorates in philosophy
and education, has a 100 per
cent placement of all students
McFee has trouble explaining
why there is a perfect placement
record except to say that, “the
department is well known.”
The program prepares
graduates either for research or
for teaching positions in col
leges and universities This
term, 26 graduates are enrolled
in the program Six of those
students are on leave Of the six
on leave, four are teaching at
other schools, one is doing field
work at an Indian-Eskimo
school in Alaska and another is
in Australia studying aboriginal
art
The reputation of the depart
ment along with the national
ranking have contributed to the
department's international
flavor Of the 26 students one
third are from Canada, and
others come from as far as
Thailand, Australia, New
Zealand. Egypt and Iran
Different people heard about
the program and decided to
come here, says McFee, who
started the graduate program
when she came to Oregon in
1965 She says she doesn't
think students discovered the
program after they got here
“They came because of the
program ''
Graduates are able to extend
their areas of study outside the
School of Architecture and Al
lied Art, where the department is
located, and some work closely
with the education, anthro
ology, psychology, and
television services depart
ments
The poll ranked the programs
on the basis of effectiveness
and faculty quality The art
education department has 5'/?
FTE faculty members who
develop their own area of ex
pertise, says McFee
Vincent Lanier, on leave in
Arizona, has lectured through
out the United States and at the
International Society for Educa
tion through Art conference in
Amsterdam last summer
Another faculty member,
Rogena Degge, has been invit
ed to deliver her paper "Envir
onment Design Education Cur
riculum Strategies" to the Eu
ropean. African and Middle
Eastern regional ISEA confer
ence in Cyprus this summer
The conference theme is "En
vironment Consciouseness in
Art Education" and McFee says
that Degge "was invited
because of her recognition in
this area "
Together Degge and McFee
have written "Art, Culture and
Enviornment" an art education
text book which was repub
lished in paperbook in 1980
