about basketball as I once was. And my studies have not
dominated so much of my time,” she says. “I’ve found
other things to do — I’m having fun off the court and out
of the library.”
Still, basketball is pretty much a way of life for
Smith. She says that when she’s by herself, she thinks
about improvements she could be making in practice.
When she goes running, she thinks about the same thing.
When she feels down and out, she thinks about how
lucky she is to be playing basketball.
“If I have a bad game, or whatever, I get down. I
used to stay down a lot longer than I do now. Like after
UCLA (a recent loss to the Bruins), I was disappointed
and upset after the game, and it took me 10 minutes to
get organized where I would have been mad all night
before and not talked to anyone.
“Now, when 1 get down I just think about how
lucky I am to be where I am — I could be doing a lot

“When Bev calls,” her father says, “she likes to talk
about the family, she wants to know how we’re doing —
she’s not all that interested in talking about the team.
“The other day she called and said that she’d been in
Portland (to play Portland State) and she told us about all
the relatives she’d seen. She said that Aunt Helen had
made bread, and that Maureen had made cookies. I asked
her, ‘Did you win3’ She said, ‘Oh veah, we won.' She calls
quite often, but we don’t talk much about what she’s
accomplished.”
Even so, that is not to say Bev doesn’t place a high
value on her ability to play some of the best college
basketball in America today.
One of her biggest goals at the end of this season is

over Kings

Kansas City Kings.
The Blazers, 24-18, trailed the
Kings by seven points, 60-53, earlv in
the third quarter when Natt and
