It wasn't a weekend that
Oregon coach Elwin Heiny Is
likely to forget for a long time
The Oregon women's basket
ball team was shellacked by un
beaten USC 86-64 and by an
improving UCLA squad 90-74 to
give Heiny his worst weekend
ever in coaching at Oregon
"It was rough," understated
Heiny "We realize that we have
a lot of work to do before we can
play teams of their caliber com
petitively The way we played
and the way they played showed
they were the better teams.”
The USC loss was Heiny's
second worst ever as a Duck
coach, and the back-to-back
losses were his first since early
in 1979 when Oregon dropped a
couple to San Franciso and
Texas
The ninth-ranked Ducks' play
wasn't indicative of how good
they really are, though Against
USC, Bev Smith, who usually
plays her best in the big games,
fouled out with over 16 minutes
left to play with only 13 points
and a single rebound to her
credit The Ducks, a power team
inside, was beaten 39-11 on the
boards in the first half and 76-30
for the game
These things just don't hap
pen to Oregon
And then there were the
McGee twins Pam and Paula, a
pair of 6-3 giants who are likely
candidates for all-American
honors, beat the Ducks at their
own inside game to combine for
46 points and 32 rebounds
"They are good — very
good," said Heiny of the

Twenty-one men and nine women who
have spent the past month running up hills at
the crack of dawn are happy to return to the
water as the Oregon crew team returned to
its rowing exercises this week
Tim Meyer, commodore for the men s
crew is hoping that the crew s return to the
will bring out some of the rowers who have
been reluctant to attend the earl workouts
He says the women s squad is particularly m
need of more rowers

McGees. "We do a lot of things
well inside, but so do they. They
have a lot of talent and they
showed it.
UCLA, Saturday night, picked
up where the Trojans left off,
out-rebounding the Ducks
47-30. This time Oregon was
still in the game 40-40 early in
the second half, but the Bruins
went on a 19-4 scoring streak,
blowing the Ducks out of the
game and out of Los Angeles
"We went down there to learn
to play against teams like these
in circumstances like these. In
the past we never played these
teams until during the postsea
son tournament, so it was a
good learning experience,”
said Heiny
The Ducks definitely had to
learn something about the of
ficiating Oregon was constantly
in trouble with Alison Lang
fouling out of both games,
Smith was forced to leave early
against USC and Chris Metzger
had to do the same against
UCLA The usually mild-man
nered Heiny even received a
technical foul against UCLA
when he asked for a clarification
on a foul by Lang.
“We have to learn to play and
adjust when things don’t go
well.” said Heiny. “I was not real
happy with the officiating, but
we have to learn to adjust to it.
The other players have to pick
up the slack when we lose some
people to fouls
“We have a lot of young
players who ended up playing
because of fouls and others we
were forced to play who were
just coming off injuries.”
Metzger and Lisa Vetter were
both coming off foot injuries,
and despite Vetter's nine points
against UCLA, they did not play
up to their usual performance.
Oregon dropped to 13-4 on
the season and can kiss its
top-10 ranking goodbye. With
the second-ranked Trojans’ vic
tory over the Ducks, coupled
with No. 1 Louisiana Tech’s loss
to Old Dominion, probably
boosted USC to the top spot.

Slip Into Something More Comfortable
The HYDROCURVE 1155 Contact Lens for Extended Wear is very thin,
soft and comfortable. Because of its overall thinness (0.05 mm) and
moderately high water content (55%), HYDROCURVE II Contact
Lenses for Extended Wear are safe for continuous wear up to two
weeks at a time. You can put them in and leave them in. It’s that easy.
