SUAB disapproves
IFC’s new selection
The Student University Affairs Board Wednesday rejected an
appointment to the Incidental Fee Committee and approved a
proposal redefining Dead Week requirements.
In a 4-1 vote, with three abstentions, SUAB reversed an earlier
voice vote approval of Robert Payne. Saying the previous vote was
premature, chairer Gale Graham steered the group into what he
called an executive session,” during which board members raised
numerous questions about Payne
Under Oregon Revised Statutes 192 660, executive sessions
may not be called for the discussion of "The filling of a vacancy in
an elective office ”
Payne, an administrative assistant to the IFC, said in a ques
tion-and-answer session previous to the "executive session” that
he is not prejudiced against any ASUO-funded organization and
that he would not be intimidated by other IFC members
My views are working with everyone else personally,” he said
The rejection of Payne was apparently based on members'
doubts of Payne's ability to not be easily persuaded and remain
objective in funding student organizations — views expressed
during the so-called executive session
SUAB members also said they preferred more time to inves
tigate Payne, with one board member expressing surprise Payne
could not tell SUAB his ideas on ASUO organizations despite his
work for the IFC for more than two months
But Graham said ASUO needed a decision immediately
because IFC budget hearings begin Monday
ASUO Pres Rich Wilkins, who appointed Payne, said he was a
little surprised” by the decision and that Payna’s name would be
resubmitted at SUAB's Friday meeting IFC chairer Karsten Ras
mussen had no immediate comment about the decision

Jordan's Monday resignation
Commissioners nix development
Lane County commissioners voted 3-2 Wednesday to reject a
land-use change necessary for construction of a $55-million
housing and recreational development on the McKenzie River east
of Eugene
The Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Co had proposed building 600
family and retirement homes, 200 vacation units, a lodge and a retail
center on 260 acres near the town of Leaburg
The commissioners' decision came on a Weyerhaeuser ap
plication for an exception to a statewide planning goal requiring
protection of forest land
Wednesday s vote reaffirmed a tentative decision made by the
commissioners last month Weyerhaeuser says it has spent more
than $100,000 seeking the land-use exception
