publishes last issue
PHILADELPHIA
The Bulletin, once the na
tion’s largest afternoon daily,
announced Wednesday that it
will publish its last edition Friday
because of growing financial
losses
"I feel lousy about it,” Pub
lisher NS. "Buddy” Hayden told
hushed employees in the news
room "The hardest thing to do
is close a great newspaper like
this ”
The 134-year-old newspaper
becomes the fourth major daily
to close in six months, joining
the afternoon Washington Star
the afternoon Tonight edition of
the New York Daily News and
the morning Philadelphia Jour
nal
The Bulletin closing will affect
1,743 full-time employees, in
cluding 250 reporters and edi
tors It leaves the nation's fourth
largest city with one newspaper
owner, the Knight-Ridder
group, which publishes the
morning Inquirer and the after
noon tabloid Daily News
For nearly a month, while The
Bulletin was losing nearly
$60,000 a day. Hayden and
other executives negotiated
with prospective buyers
" After substantial discus
sions, each investor deemed the
risks of loss to be too high and
declined to proceed.” said J P
Smith Jr., president of the
Charter Co subsiaiary that
bought full control of The Bulle
tin a year ago
Williams connected
to two more victims
ATLANTA
Wayne Williams asked for
permission to take pictures at
the scene where the body of one
of 28 slain young blacks was
found, and he may have provid
ed a talent audition for another
victim, witnesses testified Wed
nesday at his murder trial.
Williams, a 23-year-old black
free-lance photographer and
aspiring talent promoter, is
charged with murdering Na
thniel Cater, 27. and Jimmy Ray
Payne, 21, two of the youths
whose deaths over a 22-month
period have been investigated
by a special police task force

later identified as Williams
asked if he could take photo
graphs of the body of Terry Pue.

Leftist guerrillas hijacked a
Colombian jetliner, forced the
pilot to land at Bogota s airport
and then took off again for an
undisclosed destination, au
thorities said
The hijackers, according to a
Colombian radio broadcast,
had threatened to blow up the
plane if the army moved in
Officials said there were
seven hijackers, who said they
were members of M19, Colom
bia's most active guerrilla
group
The jetliner, a Boeing 727
from the Colombian airline Ae
rotal. was hijacked shortly after
it took off from Bogota s El Do
rado airport at 1 09 p m for the
west-central city of Pereira The
plane returned to the Bogota
airport at 1 34 p m under com
mand of the hijackers
In a radio call to the control
tower the hijackers demanded
that a reporter from the Bogota
newspaper El Espectador come
aboard the plane to take a list of
the hijackers demands to
