Oregon men down Cougars 60-56
By Steve Spate
Of ttf EnwaU
If they were coming to
McArthur Court to watch an ex
citing college basketball game.
Oregon fans would have been
better off arriving late Saturday
night to catch Oregon's 60-56
win over Washington State
In fact, very late.
Those fans in attendance for
the first 38 minutes of play wit
nessed an exhibition of lousy
rebounding, sloppy passing and
slow-reacting defense on the
Ducks' part. In turn, the
Cougars seemed to determined
not to allow the Ducks to fall to
their fourth straight Pacific 10
Conference defeat
But those who were just set
tling into their seats at the two
minute mark saw Oregon come
to life and play heads-up bas
ketball down the stretch.
With the score tied 55-55 and
1:10 left, Oregon’s Barry Walker
swiped the ball from WSU's Ty
rone Brown in the backcourt,
then unselfishly dished off to a
streaking Dave Brantley for the
go-ahead layup
After that it was a matter of the
Ducks intelligently stopping
WSU's final offensive chance,
then hitting a few free throws to
push Oregon to 3-3 in Pacific 10
Conference standings, and give
them momentumn for tonight's
Mac Court matchup against the
Washington Huskies (8 p.m.)
“I'm quite pleased with the
win,” croaked Oregon coach
Jim Haney, battling the effects
of a cold and 40 minutes of
screaming at referees "We
played with good intensity down
the stretch — enough to win
anyway
"That was such an unselfish
play by Barry at the end It was a
nice way to win it."
"When he (Brown) came up
the court I said to myself ‘Hey, I
gotta go for it’ ” said Walker,
who has matured immeasuably
in his last season.
Dribbling hard for the hoop,
Walker drew the lone Cougar
safety away from the bucket to
him, then passed off to Brantley
“I saw Dave hustling down the
floor out of the corner of my eye
and I flipped it in his direction.”
The Cougars never re
grouped after that Brown
launched an off-balance 17
footer with 20 seconds that car
omed into Brantley s hands
WSU then was left with fouling
Oregon four times in the next 12
seconds to no avail
Before switching to a man-to
man in the latter stages, Oregon
opened with a new variation of

Women start slowly, finish fast
By Steve Turcotte

The Oregon women's basket
ball team started slowly and
then turned on the gas to beat
the University of Washington,
105-74, Saturday afternoon at
McArthur Court in a Northwest
Women's League basketball
game
The Ducks began the game
very slowly, but that's been their
usual style this year In fact, they
only led 16-12 with 12 minutes

Oregon then outscored the
Huskies 34-22 the rest of the

The 11th-ranked Ducks made
things worse for the school from
Seattle outscoring them 55-40
in the second half to post the
victory, its 12th on the season
against two setbacks
"Washington was leading the
league in rebounding and we
had a goal of getting the boards

Heiny
For the game, the Ducks ou

win was 6-4 sophomore center

reject nine Washington shots
All in a day's work for the

“I know I can play better,”
Lang said. "I missed a couple of
